Default Car&Driver reviews Accord Hybrid

Bottom Line: They made two major changes from the current Civic Hybrid:

- Installed an engine that can switch between V6 & V3 on demand
- Installed a small secondary A/C to keep cabin cool during engine stop

I don't think I would buy one. I prefer efficiency to speed. (Which is why I bought an Insight.) Also, I don't understand why the highway mpg is only 36? If the car operates on just 3 cylinders while highway cruising, which is 1.5 liters, shouldn't the highway MPG be up in the 40s?

3rd change is that the IMA is more 'powerful' and more efficient than in the Civic Hybrid or Insight

I wouldn't call and 2% and +1hp a "major" change.

Technically it switches between a V6 and an I3.

And the IMA, while it doesn't add much horsepower, adds 100lb/ft of torque, which is used to smooth out the torque curve. If anyone has driven a VW/Audi turbo engine, you know what that smooth torque "plateau" feels like.

There is a mistake in Car and Driver's paper :
Quote:
This Honda's hybrid machinery is relatively simple, but a densely wound motor and an Ni-MH battery pack of 13.8 kilowatt-hours add pounds.
Obviously it can't be as large as 13.8 kWh (ten times the Prius battery capacity !) ; I haven't seen any figure yet but I guess it should be 1.38 kWh instead.
