I voted yes, but I think the Corolla would be a great regular engine alternative if the Prius is out of range. Have you looked into used Prius I or II or Honda's hybrids? A friend picked up a used Insight last year with low miles for 14k. It depends on your motivation for wanting a Prius to begin with.

Prius vs. Corolla?
Two completely different animals--no comparison.

prius is not really out of my range but it is a payment that requires me to commit to working the next 5 years nothing wrong with that my option would be i dont like spending money so I would choose the second option but I am curious how other people feel about money and car payments. I know my brother always says its only money you make more live life and enjoy it you may die tomorrow..... lol

Yeah, they are two different animals that are fairly hard to compare. Money is also not the only reason a person may want to buy a car. To me, buying a Prius was a bit out of my price range, but it was a luxury I was willing to afford because it was a "movement" that I wanted to support. It was worth the extra money to do so, whether or not I "come out ahead" in the long run. At the risk of sounding too crunchy, I believe that I'm doing a very small change to help make Mother Earth "come out ahead", and that means something to me.

Another point is that the price difference seems to be more around $8,000 than $13,000, if that matters.

If money is super tight and you still want a hybrid, Civics are about $6,000 more than a Corolla. Is that still worth it? Not sure, but it is half of the 13K we were talkin' before.

My point? Buy the car that fits who you are and what you want the most, if you are able. In the end, you should be happy and confident with what you're driving.

I'd say first that one should strenuously avoid borrowing money to buy any car. If one can write a check for it, then yes, a Prius is better than a Corolla.

Hey that what I alway say to my friend too, "It's only money". Having said that, recently I have begin to think about the cost of owning a Prius too. It's a classic of wants and needs. Originally, my plan was to get a cheap, afforthable, decent mileage car to replace a failing cargo class hauler (Doge minivan). The car I was aiming for was the Toyota Echo that cost 10K and offer 38 mpg. Then I saw the Prius and that was it. I lay the blame squarely at John1701A. After reading info at his site I was hook like a moth to the flame. But now after 6 weeks of cool down perior while waiting in line for a package 7, I have more time to think about it. Did you know a Kia RIO can be had for $6800 brand new ?I could pay it off with a credit card and do a flip flop on the interest. My current financial alowing me to buy a Prius, but I could save a lot more if I go for a KIA RIO and have enough money left to take family vacation every year for 3 years. Aruba, Cancun, Bahamas........or I could get a Prius and "trying" to take the family to vacation every other year. It's hard to decide when you don't have the money to afforth every things. And then there that image thing. either commanding an advance multi-power source starship with disruptor...no wait...forget the disruptor..where was I ...Oh yeah....or driving low end, small, cheap brand, ordinary, mass produce... car.....arrggggg..decision ...decision.......

I left my two week old Prius with the dealer yesterday to tweak a couple things. They gave me a Corolla to drive for the day. The Prius is better in SO many ways I can't even begin. Even without the hybrid, it would be worth the difference.

Hep,
A few months ago I had to leave my '04 at the dealership (explained in "WARNINGS!!" thread under the Technical category) and was given an '04 Corolla to drive. This is a Prius forum and I'm not lookng to offend any Corolla owners, but, IMO, the Prius is a far superior vehicle in every way: handling, fit and finish, and comfort are all remarkably better; everything about the Prius feels more substantial.
I had been unimpressed after driving Corollas in the past and, since I had enough money and was fortunate enough not to face a waiting list, I didn't even consider the car when purchasing my Prius. Now, after driving the '04 Corolla, I can say that the '04 Prius is definitely worth the difference to me. However, if my financial situation were changed, or had I faced a long waiting list, my conclusion may well be quite different.
Drive happy,
Moo
