Default Does extended warranty really worth it for Prius?

I just got myself 2001 Prius with 35913 miles (so the warranty is almost expired). I'm just thinking whether to buy extended warranty or not. Can any of you share the common problems with Prius that justify the cost of the extended warranty?

Parts are rare, that should be enough justification.

My understanding of the Toyota Extra Care
(extended warranty) is that if you are
the original owner of the car, you have
up to 3 years/36000 miles (whichever
comes first) to get the extended warranty.

If it's a used Toyota, you have to
get the warranty at time of sale.

So, what plans (probably not Toyota's)
are you looking at? Depending on
what they will cover, length of time,
and deductable, mayhaps they might be
worth it, maybe not.

My reasoning is that not all Toyota
mechanics are up to speed on the Prius
yet... That, and parts can be hard
to come by (take a while to arrive).
I thought that the extended warranty
(at a good price from Troy at Toyota of Greenfield -
check this board) was worth the piece
of mind. No way I'd pay the MSRP
price for the Toyota Extra Care Platinum
plan that I was offered when I bought
the car... (didn't think it was
worth it at the time)

that said, I haven't had any major
problems with my Prius, and let's
hope it stays that way. (here's also
hoping that my car doesn't read this
board and decide to give me a fright
tomorrow morning for fun with a bunch
of error lights. )

My silver 2002 which I bought November was a "track car" with 15000 miles on it. I got a 100,000 mile extended warrenty when I bought it.

I'm thinking about WarrantyGold. I used them for my Jeep (which I'm trying to sell right now) and so far it is worth the money. However, since it is a Toyota, I have a feeling that it might not need the extra warranty. I'll check with them to see how much that they can offer me for this.

Ultimately, you should check to see whether you are comfortable self-insuring for car problems. But in making your decision, please be sure to read all of the warranty you are planning on getting. We got one with a vehicle we purchased, only to find out later that you had to take the vehicle to the original purchasing dealer to have them fix it first, regardless of where the thing broke down. There can be all sorts of things not included in these warranties, too, so make sure you take that into account.

I didn't do an extended warranty on my new Prius. Still just as comfortable and a little richer in the pocketbook for it.

Just a little correction on Michelle's statement......

You don't have to be the original owner to get a new vehicle extra care plan.....Even if its purchased pre-owned aka "used", so long as its under 36,000 miles and less than 3 years from the date of first use, you can purchase a new car policy.

If the car exceeds either of those limits, then you would have to get a used car plan, which would have to be purchased from the selling dealer at the time of sale.
