Default Battery Issue

Hey folks, new to forum and wanted to get some insight from current owners. I have a 2011 Prius with 38500k miles on it. Yesterday driving home from work, i made a stop at the grocery store for about 15 minutes. When returning to my car and trying to start it up, I saw a couple of red icons and check engine light. Engine would not start. I pressed the ignition button several times and was finally able to get the car going again. Drove it home approximate 2miles and turned off. Tried to turn it on again and this time no lights no nothing. All I could hear is a whirling/humming sound from the hood. I left as be and went back to check on it about an hour later. I now smelled a rotten egg smell and still couldnt get it to start.

This morning, I got a friend to help me jump start and brought it into the dealer. I was advised I need a new gel battery and it would cost me $300. Has anyone had the same issue or have I been duped? Considering it is so low in mileage, I dont undertsand why the battery would need to be replaced so quickly. Any info is appreciated.

These 12Volt batteries seem to last about 3 years (for me anyway). They are special and vented to the outside to prevent buildup of Hydrogen gas from the re-charge process (2004-2009 cars).

I haven't looked to see what is in my 2013, but I would expect the life time for these batteries are about the same. Unfortunately, it sounds as though the price is about the same. I expect I will find out next year when my 2013's battery dies.

You could check around for another supplier. Optima made batteries for the 2004-2009 Prius an a kit to adapt the Hydrogen venting and they may have ones to replace your 2011 Prius battery. I have always stayed with the Toyota batteries.

There is a company in California selling an Optima battery and adaptors that fits Prius v and likely other Prii.

I had the same thing happen to me just now. I am waiting for AAA to come to me now. Fortunately my car is in my garage when it decided to die. Not even the horn will work. The overhead light is very dim but works. I have a 2011 Prius II hybrid and have not had any trouble before. I will find out if AAA can do anything for me. I'm afraid if a jump works then it might need another one when I park my car. I can't get the battery replaced today as the dealer is closed today. I'll let you all know what happens.

Hi. This is a follow-up to my previous post. AAA came and jump-started my 2011 Prius II. He told me to drive it for at least an hour, which I did, but I'm afraid it may not start again tomorrow morning so I may have to get another jump tomorrow. Then I'll bring it to the dealer to get a new battery. Before the jump, nothing worked, not even the door, the radio, or even the horn.
