Default Top Speed for an '06

Friday, while driving home on I15 north of San Diego, I was in a pack of cars that were going about 75 mph, then they picked up stepped it up to 80. At this point I was getting a little concerned. At 82 the ICE started cycling on and off about every five seconds. I turned my emergency flashers on and worked my way to the right hand lane and slowed to 75.
What is the top speed of a 2006 Prius?

I started a post in the general forum regarding this stuff. I took my 2006 Prius to 102 with no hassle, but others have posted going faster with theirs. Here's the linke to it: https://www.priusonline.com/viewtopic.php?t=7497&start=0

What makes you say it was cycling on and off? You do realize you are driving a hybrid, and can drive without ICE. Admittedly, not as likely on level ground at 85 MPH, but certainly possible depending on load, incline, and battery SOC.

Are you talking about what was being displayed to you on the MFD? If so, don't worry. The MFD shows you only a fraction of what is going on under the hood. If it is going to cause you concern, turn it off on the highway and just drive.

Unless there was a specific problem with you trying to maintain speed with the pack of lunatics or if warning lights came up while maintaining speed, there was no reason for alarm.

It has been said:
Hybrid drivers come in 3 flavors, greenie, techie and cheapie. Pick any 2.

I think Road & Track tested their car at 110 mph - not sure but it's in their long-term fleet and I suspect it's an '05.

Thanks for all the great replies. Yes, here on the San Diego freeways, when conditions are right, 80mph is the going rate of travel. When my family members visit from the midwest, they near faint when they realize how fast they are going. All in all, not for the faint of heart.

Unless you're getting a warning light, your Prius will handle any speed the freeway is likely to generate. Over 70 the MPG goes to pot but you get there faster..
Unless coasting, at 70+, the ICE will (should) run continuously.
I've had mine up to 105 for a brief spurt. The Prius is eager to go fast but it's not the most stable high-speed platform around.
