I still check regularly, but not much happening here except SPAM. Too bad, it used to be a really active site; and there's still lots of info in the archives.

I guess it was bound to become less active as hybrid vehicles expand in society, and the high-tech novelty wears off for first adopters.

Unfortunately, it now looks like a site for Dodge Neons...

And....

It looks like it may have returned.

I stopped by again a couple weeks ago, to find only one 'real' post amongst a ton of spam. Now, a lot of new posts, and no spam.

Maybe I'll make this a daily stop again.

Hey, ehurtley,

It seems I became a thorn in someone's side because I kept complaining about all the spams I reported (but weren't being deleted) & I finally sent out PM's to the 2 administrators (Pete & Jeff) & another part-time moderator. Apparently they realized that I was still here on a regular basis (based on all the spam reports I made), so somebody saw fit to apparently make me a moderator also (without telling me---I discovered it accidentally when getting ready to report some more spams). I check the site 3 times a day & have deleted as many as 200 spams per day. Since I got that power on Jan 19th, I would venture to say that I've realistically deleted well over 2,000 spams that you guys haven't had to look at. I have also had the pleasure of approving the real posts of a few new members, but with so many spam posts each day I sometimes find the job a real daunting task. The worst part is that I don't have the power yet to ban repeat offenders. I may delete one spammer's post early in the morning & find as many as 50 more by the same spammer before the day is done. The job would be a lot easier if I could ban too.

To get more activity here we need 2 things : our expert die-hard members to answer questions & new questions to be posed by new members & lurkers. The last one may be a little harder to control as a lot of people are using PriusChat. I think they go there because the categories are more varied & specific [they have segregated posts for the "Classic", the Gen II, & now the Gen III (& also a "newbie" category too)]. Most of the questions come from "newbies" & purchasers of the Gen III, but you don't find those categories on our site. Still I have some confidence that this site will soon start growing again (I hope so anyway).

It's good that they promoted someone to moderator who is still active.

I've gone down to only coming once a week or so. Now since the mini-revival, I'm up to a couple days between visits.

They should 'freeze' the Help section for a while. That's where the spammers are living now...

Isn't there some kind of SPAM filter they can use on this site? McAfee seems to be able to filter it out on my personal PC. Hotmail even eliminates some of it, although that must be a daunting task with so many users. It just seems like there must be something made for BBS software (or whatever this site uses).

Also, it seems like the Internet provider could block some sites to reduce the SPAM.

Morning, ehurtley, firepa63, & Phoenix,

I'm not sure what members who are not moderators see in the topics when they visit here. I probably see this site somewhat different from what the 2 of you see because of my newly assigned powers. You guys tell me, do you see 2 more symbols to the right of the reporting "!" icon in the lower right corner of each post, (I do)? Do you guys see a list of posts when you click on the "View unanswered posts" phrase (just below the log-in area at the top left of the main page)? I do most of my deletions from that list because it's easier to just keep clicking away (deleting) from that one page until they're all done, than to go through all the different topics to hunt for the ones that need to go. Each page from that list has 50 entries. I wasn't home last night & I got rid of 2 1/2 pages (about 125 spams) from the courtesy computer in the hotel I was at around 7:00PM. I just did only about 15 more that were there this morning just before I started to type this message out.

You were right for a while about most of the spams appearing in the "Help" topic before I inadvertently became a moderator, but now I seem to find most of them in the "Off topic/General & General Cars" categories (according to that list I start with). Some of the ones in my list of unanswered posts appear as simple spam posts, but others appear in that list with a green ? mark after them (meaning they are awaiting approval). Anything in that list (whether followed by a "?" or not) is a simple 2-click deletion for me because nobody has responded to them (if they even appear to you guys) or because they're not attached to anybody else's post or thread.

Once I have finished with that list, I then go to each topic & scroll down looking for a green ? mark after a THREAD (meaning there is a post awaiting approval ATTACHED to/in that thread). Getting rid of one of these requires more work & more care (it's not just the one click prior to the "Delete, Yes or No" choice click). If I do that the whole thread disappears [I found out the hard way by accident, when by doing that, I wiped out a 3-post thread (no real loss as the other posts were by a dealer about his upcoming allocations & what was currently on his lot---all back in 2006)]. To get rid of one of the ATTACHED "Awaiting Approval" spams, I first have to click on a different icon, then decide on whether to "lock" or "delete" the post first, before I click on the " Delete, Yes or No" box (then the rest of the thread remains). With the speed of the number of deletions I've been doing, it would be easy to get confused & accidentally do an unintended THREAD deletion from within each topic, so that's why I start with the "View unanswered posts" list (that's where 90% of the spams appear for me). After those have been deleted, then I go into the slower & more careful mode of getting rid of the rest of the ATTACHED spams by scrolling through each of the individual topics.

By the way, when I mentioned close to the end of the 2nd paragraph above "(if they even appear to you guys)", that was because when I see a post followed by the green ? (Awaiting approval) in a topic, that post's author & posting time & date DON'T appear/AREN'T included in the "Last post" column at the right side of the "Board Index" page for that particular forum/topic (however, I do see both on the topic page once I click on the main category from the board index---what about you guys, either place?). I think you guys only see the unanswered spams that for some reason have gotten in here without needing to await approval (I don't know how that happens). Anyway, I'm doing the best that I can to keep this site as clean as possible for all of you (no applause necessary, just throw money). Have a nice weekend!

Ken,

Regarding your note "do you see 2 more symbols to the right of the reporting "!" icon in the lower right corner of each post"; no, I do not see anything next to the "!" icon.

I really appreciate your efforts, because if the SPAM continued like it was for quite awhile, I was about to abandon this site. My son has some experience with BBS software. I'll see if he can shed any light on how other sites handle the SPAM automatically.

Last year, the government made some progress putting a couple of spammers in jail. I wish they could do more. These people seem to have no other goal in life but to make money off of the masses and cause grief. It's a real shame that so much effort is necessary to offset their lack of ethics. (They just need their moms to give them a good spanking!)

In any case, thanks; your help is greatly appreciated. Now, if we could just get some new members in here, and get some of the oldtimers back, to breathe some new life into this site.

I'd really like to hear more info on the 2010 plug-in Prius, as I am thinking about buying one more Prius before I retire.
