Default Sharkfin Antenna

Have any of you installed the Sharkfin Antenna? Is the reception as good or better then the factory unit? Are some brands of this antenna better then others?

I have installed the Sharkfin sold at PriusChat.
Reception is worse but acceptible for local stations.
I have my XM antenna installed under it...reception is modestly decreased for that too...but it's worth the mild loss of the nice appearance.
Don't know anything about the other brands.

can the shark fin be placed anywhere on the car?
I'd like to have it at the front instead of the rear

Well, you can stick it anywhere you like...but the hole in the roof for the antenna wire is in the back where the whip is currently located. If you chose to place it elsewhere you'd need to run the antenna wire there.

The shark fin itself is a plastic hollow shell with an adhesive seal at the bottom and it has a little replacement antenna inside of it that attaches to your antenna wire.

Yeah, I see that now. Dang. It would look so much cooler up front! Like a mohawk.

As stated above, reception is only good for very local stations, significantly poorer than the original. The one mod I regret.

maybe ill just stick a shark fin up front for the heck of it (and keep my original antenna)! ha ha

Do they make a snub antenna that works as well as the original? Guess I'll start Google-ing

One of these might be the solution:

And possibly the suggestion that you stop sticking things on the exterior of these wind tunnel designed cars!

Please!
I've had 2 or 3 tanks over 70mpg since putting on my shark fin. It's very sleak and aerodynamic...any wind tunnel negatives it would add are negligible.
Amazingly I've pulled off these 70mpg tanks and lifetime 55mpg with....wait for it....mud flaps and body side mouldings!!! The car can hardly move through the air with all that external modding.

Remember that even though they did careful wind tunnel testing there were still practical issues that had to be taken into account. Perhaps they felt that a whip antenna would be cheaper and would work better as an antenna than the shark-fin even though a shark fin would be more aerodynamic. I don't know that to be true, but neither do you know it to be wrong. But the bottom line is that a shark fin shows no measurable change in FE or aerodynamic performance in real world every day driving.
