I had black car bras on my previous 2 cars and never had a problem with scratches or the paint being rubbed off, and that was over the course of about 50,000 miles between the two. You can go to autoanything.com and choose from the ones made for your make/model and get one that is breatheable, so no not all need to be removed when getting wet. However I think it's definitely a good idea to take it off every few weeks (or as you see fit based on your own driving and weather) to wash the car underneath as some dirt does get trapped underneath so you'd want to wash that off before it has a chance to become abrasive on the finish.

But then I got the Prius and decided I didn't want the big black car bra.

I read the referenced above post, and then also got the film from Invinca-Shield and my buddy and I put it on -- if I had to do it over again I'd gladly pay the extra money to have a professional shop do it. Mine has several creases in it which can't be seen unless you're standing next to the car, but if you are next to it they don't look very good at all. So while I love the invisible shield film because of the way it's protected the front end from rocks and bugs, it's definitely not as easy as they state on the website and the video they send as part of the kit once it comes to covering the curved areas.

Good luck --

Jeff

I bought a bra, had it on until it rained and it hasn't been back on since!

I wish that I hadn't spent the money.

You know, that'll be my situation too.... You helped me push over to the why bother side of the fence I was sitting on!
