Default Prius accessories

Does anyone know where I can get a bike rack for a prius? I'm intersted in any accessories beyond what Toyota offers.

Any help will be apprecated.

There's a whole ongoing thread on that very issue. Do a search for bike, and I bet you find it. Try this one: https://www.priusonline.com/viewtopic.ph ... 1&start=30

I'd advise reading the Dave Q & A post before ordering from Coastal Electronics. I've had bad experiences and so have others. The only reason my complaint was finally resolved is I contacted the Better Business Bureau and the Florida Attorney General.

First off the following info was all gained from reading here. Coastal Dave offered a trailer hitch that was engineered to simply bolt into the threaded holes in the Prius frame that were originally used to bolt the Prius to it's shipping container. Simple to install and the hitch accepted numerous bike racks offered in all the catalogs for bike racks.
Someone came along and made up a bunch of similar hitches and advertised them on "E" bay at about fifty bucks a piece less than Daves and he took (or threatened to take) them to court and they withdrew the ad.
I believe if you check with "U Haul" you will find that they market this same hitch although you can probably still get it immediately from Dave if he still has them in stock. His "other" items seem to be ordered "AFTER" he receives a large back-log of requests.
I deduce that Coastal Daves main business is not Prius oriented but must be fairly lucritive as he did recently purchase a $41,000 Highlander.
My guess would be that Dave picked up a new Classic Prius in 02, got interested in the workings and started up a sideline of producing ev switchs, engine run lights, brake regenenerative indicators and some weird (too me) electronics. Some of this got upgraded for the 04 when Dave "upgraded" but he obviously lost interest. Now from the recent postings his Prius products have mainly been pushed aside. I'm sure he is very successful in what he really does for a living. (Most of this is conjecture on my part and justs seems to follow "the facts posted here)

Default Coastal Dave...

I was just on Coastal Daves website (coastaletech.com) and it seems like business as usual. The only thing I ever bought from this site was their hitch receiver. I found it easy to install (about an hour) and it works great with my bike rack. I'll admit that it's a little on the pricy side (at $149). I bought it 2 years ago when there wasn't too many choices in aftermarket Prius gear.

If I were in the market for one today, I would certainly check around for a better deal. However, if I couldn't find one, I'd be checking with Coastal Dave again. I bought the 1 1/4" model and it's never "grounded" out on an upslope. I suppose the 2" model might not jiggle as much, but my 1 1/4 model has gone on a couple of 200 mile trips with no problems. I recently discovered that I can let my bike rack slope back at a 45 degree angle with bikes attached while stopped for ease in getting into the tailgate door.

Default More on receiver hitches...

I was just on eBay and couldn't find ANY Prius receiver hitches for sale. I then googled "receiver hitches prius" and found 2 other websites besides Coastale Dave that do offer them. One was priced at over $200 and the other was $132 ($17 less than Dave.) So, perhaps Dave's price is not that far out of line compared to what's out there. If you look at one, you would think they could be sold for less than $100 and still make a decent profit. I'm certainly satisfied with my coastaletech model.

Since I'm considering buying a 2006 Prius, if anyone knows of a cheaper Prius receiver hitch, I would appreciate hearing about it. Otherwise, I'll be taking the one off of my 2004 model for reuse on the new car. I would much prefer to install a new one verses taking the old one off, putting back the old pieces that came off to make room for the hitch and then installing it back on the new car. Mainly, I'm just lazy.
