Has Toyota really been building Camry's since 1957?

The first Camry Sold in America was in 1983, replacing the Corona ........ But Toyota is using the Camry Hybrid for the 50th Anniverary Edition for the 50 Years that Toyota has been in America.

"Starting in 1955, Toyota produced its first luxury car, the Crown, powered by a four cylinder, 1.5-liter engine with a three-speed column shift, followed by the 1-liter Corona; only 700 cars per month were made in 1955, but this rose to 11,750 in 1958, and 50,000 per month in 1964.

Toyota started selling cars in the United States in 1958, importing the Land Cruiser and Toyopet. While neither sold well, the margins on the Land Cruiser were better, and the Toyopet was withdrawn while Toyota designed a car specifically modified for the American market a strategy which later gave us the Avalon and Camry. "

Hence the 50th Annversary............ any other question ..... OR do you want to Buy a Car!!!!lol

Sorry, I just bought a new car but I like your style. I sorta thought the first Toyota's were the Corollas and about the mid sixties at that. Sorta remember a brother in law of mine purchasing one of the first and having to have the cylinder head replaced twice the first year with one newly redesigned.
What the hey. It makes a good reason to have a sale!

I had a used 72 Corona I owed in mid-late 80's. Don't remember the mileage on it, and don't even know if it flipped before I owned it. But the previous owner of that car is a member of this site, and now owns a Prius. He was a neighbor when I was living in NY.
It did pretty well, but it admittedly it needed some repairs eventually. The timing chain guide broke, and before that, one of the servos in the tranny gave way. Actually a bolt got loose, and eventually the other bolt bent and the mounting broke.

Interesting, my sons "significant other" is planning on trading her 700 Beemer in and has just about decided on a new Camry. Her local dealer is allowing her to rent the V6 fully equipped Camry she has just about decided on for a five day "weekend" to drive from Darien Ct. to Richmond Va. so that she can determine the comfort. He recommended this car over one of the new Hybrid Camrys. The sales price is practically identicle and he has a large supply of each model at his dealership.
(he will ignore rental charges if she purchases the car. "That's salesmanship")

Toyota just came out with a rental/buy program ...... But I don't understand why she would give up the Hybrid for a V-6 ..... I know she drives a BeeMeer 700 ......... just she doesn't care about the Environment or Cost of Gas.......

Dealer proably has dozens of V-6's and NO Hybrids..........

I've been driving a hybrid for three years and personally I would purchase the standard V6. Except for the few extra MPG I see no reason for driving a hybrid around the United States.
And since she has decided on another boring sedan and has enjoyed her five year old BMW and just wants a new car, I am going to suggest she take a look at the Buick Lucerne before making a final decision.
