Default Master Warning Light stays on when car is started, battery charge/drains quicker

My 2005 Prius will 138k miles on it has Master warning light come on when I start the car and it stays on. Another light that is yellow and looks like ((!)) stays on, the MFD just says "Problem" and when I change to MFD to show where energy is going, the Battery seems to charge and drain much quicker than normal. Any idea what this is?

When I leave the car on but I'm not driving anywhere on the energy screen it will use the engine to charge the battery about every 3 seconds.

1. Check 12v battery -- Remove, charge and take to auto parts store to have load tested. This will also reset all of the system codes.

You can also test 12v battery using procedure outlined on this link: http://www.elearnaid.com/prhadonotstr.html

eLearnAide also sells Optima replacement batteries at competitive prices.

Note: I have no association with eLearnAid, other than being a satisfied customer. Over the years, I have purchased three batteries for our 2002 Prius and one for our 2008 Tundra.

2. Check hybrid system coolant pump (you can see fluid movement in fluid reservoir). Some models have a recall on this part. The pump in our classic Prius has failed twice since purchasing new in 2002.

When pump doesn't run, hybrid module overheats and throws several fail codes. Continuing to run with defective pump will quickly result in very expensive repairs (several thousand dollars) to replace boards in the hybrid module.

Note: Cost for dealer to replace coolant pump (if not replaced free due to recall) is a couple of hundred dollars, which includes parts and labor.
