I know this is a 5yr old thread, but just some info that might help. I believe there is an engine warning light that comes up when the timing chain needs to be replaced.
My 2008 Prius has 717,000km on the clock and the timing chain is now well an truly due for replacement. I found a step by step guide on the internet here https://www.autozone.com/repairguide...96b43f80379c05
and it looks like it will be quite an experience. The parts are cheap enough though, I'll put a thread up about how it went once the parts get here from Taiwan or where ever and I get my head into stripping the thing down.
