Default How much will short trips knock off your MPG?

I have a new 07 and had been getting about 50MPG on combined city-highway driving. This past few days I have had to do allot of short trips around town and my MPG is dropping like a rock. Is this to be expected? I might add that it has been about 90 degrees here and my AC has been on constantly.

Short trips kill your MPG. If you look at the consumption screen you will notice that in the first 5 minutes your MPG is low, from 25 to 30, especially if you start out with a cold engine. The reason it is so low is that the ICE needs to warm for polution control. The second 5 minutes your MPG will increase and by the third 5 minutes, you should be up to normal. As cold weather approaches, you will see further decreases in MPG.

I make a lot of short trips, but my lifetime average for my 04 is just over 45 MPG.

It can help to chain short trips together to reduce your total miles traveled. But if engine off time at any given stop is long enough its still going to kill your MPG.

It also helps if your spouse can jump out without you coming to a complete stop, get the video and beer, and jump back in when you circle around again.

Since your car is "new" I'm guessing the short trips are impacting your MPG more than it will in the future. Obviously this will all calculate out higher than usual if you let your MPG meter accumulate miles rather than reset after each fill up (if you DONT hit RESET, it will just keep an ongoing average until you do so.. you may want to reset one of your trip Odometers if you're going to hit reset, then you know how many miles that average is for). It's been about 2k since my last reset, the short trips still affect my mpg about 0.1-0.2MPG per mini-trip, but come back up after a regular drive.

AC will also be a factor with your stops, especially if the cabin absorbs exess solar heat as it sits turned off. The AC then has to run extra hard to catch up and dump all that heat stored in the plastics and metal.
