Buying Touring VS. Regular Prius - is it worth it??

Hi - Getting ready to buy a '08 Prius and wondered if there really is a difference between Touring and 'regular' Prius? Hard to tell during a short test drive - I am a bit of an aggresive driver - not crazy or anything, but like to push it a bit around corners and stuff. So, wondered if I should get the Touring or save my money and put it towards a higher package.....

Anybody have any luck recently negotiating much on the prices? Local dealer (in Bradenton, FL.) said no discounts off MSRP.
Thanks!!

If what he told you is true, you live in the only part of the country where this is so! Make a few calls down the street and take a look at his inventory.

Oh, I'll shop around - but want to make sure of what I want before I start getting into the nitty-gritty.

Smart move. But if your really an Agressive driver I'de turn an eye towards Mazda. It's pretty hard to have your cake and eat it too!
The Prius will give you excellent milage!

If you're an 'agressive' driver, the Prius is not the car for you. The idea behind the Prius is better MPGs. Agressive driving won't get you there with the Prius.

ummmm......the Prius is for everyone. The fact is, every driving style will benefit from the Prius.

Yes, the idea behind the Prius is better MPG--across all driving styles. Aggressive driving in a Prius *will* get you there compared to similarly aggressive driving in, say, an Accord.

Likewise, you can buy that 4 cylinder manual trans Accord and drive it appropriately, and get much better gas mileage than the guy who drives it aggressively. But the guy who drives the Accord aggressively will benefit from the prius, even if he continues to drive aggressively.

There is no need to drive the Prius in any special way, or otherwise to change your driving habits. Whatever your driving habits, you will realize the benefits of the Prius technology.

I am going to get a Prius, maybe aggresive driver is not a good description, I certainly don't Hot Rod! - what I am wondering is - Has anyone driven both Touring and regular and noticed much difference? Is it really worth spending the extra money - does the car drive better?

Put it this way. They are both economy cars outfitted with rear drum brakes. Some folks feel they drive better with a number of "differant" brand tires. Some have bought "stiffening plates" for body stiffness. Some buy the Touring for the bigger wheels. Your doing the right thing in driving them both and settling on the one you like. A guy in Texas that has both likes the Touring better. A guy in Arizona that has owned both likes the standard better. And the seats in both are uncomfortable. Unfortunately it takes more than a few miles to figure this out. But one thing is positive and that is you should get at "least" 42MPG driving it normally. You just might like to try the Honda Civic hybrid for an entirely different ride with the same milage figures.

I feel obligated to respond to the constant 'the seats are uncomfortable' crap.

The seats are GREAT. I do 6 hours in my Prius, and I go straight through without ever stopping--and I get out as refreshed as when I got in.

I have a 2004 "regular" Prius and a 2007 Touring. I used to drive the '04. Now my wife and kids mostly use the '04 and I usually drive the '07. I do notice a difference in the suspension. The Touring edition is slightly stiffer and tends to be a little more stable on the highway and with crosswinds. I think it corners a little better too. I like the look of the larger tires and the wheel trim on the Touring edition better than the those on the regular edition. The downside of the Touring edition is that driving the cars in the same manner, I get about 3 mpg less with the Touring edition. I like them both but have a slight personal preference for the Touring edition. And for what it's worth, I find the seats equally comfortable. I have cloth in the '04 and leather in the '07. They both seem to fit me well.
