The Lovely Mrs. Hep bought a new dresser for the bedroom. It was $85 to have it delivered, and I was sure we could do it ourselves. The guy at the dock looked doubful when I pulled up, but with the back seats down and the front seats scooted up a bit, we got it home just fine. He said "Who needs a truck!? And you get... what?... 50 mille per gallon?"

Here are some unloading pictures.[/b]

It looks like the car was made for the dresser, or vice versa. :)

Bah. I carried home a full-size recliner in a 79 Civic hatch.

Nothing new.

Exactly!! Just pointing out that many people who insist they need a big vehicle because "sometimes they have to haul stuff" may underestimate what you can do with a hatchback.

I guarantee it will.

I brought home a 32" LCD TV--upright in the back seat.

I got disgusted when my husband's former boss and his wife were blithely telling us how their son, whose wife had just had a baby, had to run out and buy an SUV so they could haul the baby and stroller, etc around. I incredulously asked why they needed a behemoth, then rolled my eyes and said, "Puh-lease. I did that in my Corolla." Since they could afford it and its gas consumption, that made it OK, apparently.

Big Oil and Big Auto have been bombarding us with that message for two decades. Some people are just more impervious to the lies than others.

I'm not so sure about that. You are not supposed to lay plasma screens flat. It stresses the glass too much or something like that. They need to be standing up. You may have to take it out of the box but I don't think I'd want to do that in a Costco parking lot. I got a 42" plasma home in my Sienna and there was not much vertical clearance to spare. For something as expensive and fragile as a plasma, I might consider shelling out the $50 for delivery if Costco offers it. Let us know if you succeed and how.

That's true many times but not always. I have both and sometimes have to use the minivan, especially if you have 4 people at the same time. Having a second car that can handle things that the Prius can't is certainly a convenience that many people seem to appreciate.

I got rid of the Tundra and got a Prius.
I kept our older car (Honda Accord) and bought a hitch and installed same and now I can use the utility trailer and haul "Stuff." Moreover, one can buy one of those cheap trailers at Harboer Freight and use it to haul things - if you have another vehicle besides the Prius.

I love having a few people like that in my circle of friends, so they can help me "haul stuff" with their truck. Payback in home-made bread and a bottle of wine.

Just a guess off the top of my head, would be that 2/3 of the peopls with SUVs and trucks could get along just fine with a Prius.

When people aren't sure that something will fit in my Prius, I tell them I fit an 8 foot ladder in w/ the hatch closed and through a friend in the back seat. The hatchback hauling option made all the difference when I bought this car. 8)

Only if you take it out of the box. We tried with a 47 inch Vizio in the box and had to go back and get the minivan.

If you take it out...make sure you have blankets....kind of shame to ruin that screen.

I should note though...I can't put my entire rear seat down as there's a child seat on the driver side...and once you get one of them in just right and tight enough you really don't want to take them out too often.

I purchased a 43" Samsung and had to lay it down in the anti-Prius (2001 Pathfinder). It doesn't hurt the plasma if you lay it down, as long as it doesn't rest on the screen, -and- you don't try off-roading hauling it like that. I laid it on its' back, screen up, still in the box. I think it would have fit in the Prius better!

As far as letting them deliver it, I will not purchase on-line when certain shippers are used - UPS (pronounced whoops!). Same applies to local delivery outfits.

For sure measure first, then go to the store and measure the box.
