We just bought a new 2007 Prius, but we won't pick it up until tomorrow as they're putting in the security system for us. Since we have that extra day, we have a chance to mull over the various optional maintenance plans they offer. The sales guy really pushed for the "Toyota Extra Care 84 mo./ 100,000 mi. Platinum Plan" which extends the warranty on everything, gives free towing, travel protection, and substitute transportation. The plan costs an extra $1,125.

I don't typically buy these kinds of things, but I've never had a hybrid vehicle, either. Any recommendations on whether that plan would be worth it?

Why are you getting a "security system"? The Prius already has a good system.

As for the extended warranty, that's a matter of personal choice. I never bought one for my 04 and haven't needed it. You don't have to buy it when you get the car. You can purchase an extended warranty any time during the 36 month / 36000 mile normal warranty period. You can also do a lot better with the price. $1,125 sounds a little steep to me.

From what we have been reading the security system is installed at the factory and dealer charges for a computer hook-up. Doesn't seem as they have too many "takers" as the car is practically "unstealable" except by professionals with a flat-bed truck. Haven't been any postings here about this kind of occurrance in the past three years.
The "extended" is a good idea if it makes you sleep easier and worth it from "day one" if you would like to be guaranteed that loaner car. These things seem to run forever without problems but those that have computer problems seem to have to leave car at dealerships for several days for "diagnosis."
The Toyota "platinum" plan can be purchased from several Toyota dealers listed here for between eight hundred and nine hundred seventy five dollars. Seems like the dealers have a lot of leeway here. Some west coast dealers are asking sixteen hundred. I have "guessed" the plan costs them something around five hundred.

Well, got the security system because I talked them into throwing it in at no charge. Not really leaning toward the protection plan, though. The guy made it sound like I had to make up my mind today, but you're saying I have 36,000 miles? That sounds more reasonable.

Yes, you can get it anytime during the warranty period.

And you can get it from any Toyota dealer. Check out the one on Priuschat.com. His price is also very competitive.

You may also get the warranty from the dealer. When you are in the dealer finance office that is the point in time you can negoitiate the price of the warranty down. Remember, when buying a vehicle everything is negoitiable.

This morning just sold my 04 Prius BC package #9 pictures posted in Dealers Section._ Prius Sunroof and Leathers_

The lady who purchased my Prius wanted an extended Toyota Platinum plan warranty. I investigated via my Toyota financial link, plan available up to 5/60k from now. had 47900 or so when I parted company with my beloved Prius, then warranty good till 107.900 miles or till 2012 year which ever comes 1st. Cost is $1430 net no profit.

Except Southeast distribution states. They opt not to sell the genuine Toyota warranty, and instead sell an extended warranty underwrited by Fidelity.

As for the alarm, unless you have package two or less, you not only had an alarm, it was activated. Package two and under have all the hardware, but it is deactivated. It can then be activated by a dealer. The dealer is supposed to sell you what amounts to a Glass Breakage Sensor (an option with or without activated alarm), and a license to have the alarm itself activated, with appropriate instructions.
