I have a 2008 Prius with nav. A new annoying "safety" feature disallows my choosing destinations while I'm driving. Not even a passenger can use navigation to select a destination while driving.

Anyone know if it's possible to change the on-board computer so I can select destinations while I'm driving?

The safety feature is not new, but is altogether frustrating. Must be the legal dept. at Toyota, because other makers, such as Mercedes, allow you to input info as you drive.
Sometime ago, there was a post here explaining the steps to take to temporarily disable the lockout feature. You would have to do it each time you started the car, and I seem to remember that it was somewhat complicated. I never did try it on my car, but I did print out a copy for future reference, and now I can't find either that copy or the original post. I have searched this site using every possible term I can think of, with no matches coming up.
There was also at one time a post explaining how to permanently unlock the system with a jumper wire applied to the nav system box under the driver's seat. I would be concerned about warranty issues if I were to use that fix.
Maybe someone will see your post and remember how to find the instructions mentioned above.
Good luck.
Half hour+ later:
Have continued searching, and have found it! Search this site in "technical" for "Nav Whilst Moving" and it should come up. The bottom line is that it won't work for '06 models and later, according to posters on the subject, including Rickey, a knowledgeable Toyota sales professional. Sorry.

Keep searching. There have been countless threads about doing it yourself, or installing a "lockpick" product that fools the car into thinking it isn't moving long enough for you to input data.

Do you really want to "fool" this car into "thinking anything?" You just might find it not thinking it's moving and find "no brakes"
They just lost one of the biggest airplanes built in France when attempting to run it up to "take-off" power and getting the "take-off" warning horn because the flaps were not at a take-off selection. One of the technicians on board pulled a cirrcuit breaker indicating the aircraft was "in the air" (eliminating the warning horn) and the brakes (which cannot be applied in the air released,) and the airplane "leaped" into a steel "sound reducing" barrier totally destroying the aircraft and killing the six man crew. (Brand spanking new four engine "Airbus" that had never been in the air.)

Hyperion,
Are you talking about the Airbus crash last November? If so, there were nine people on board and five were injured with no fatalities, according to reports I have read. Was there a coverup?

I've heard several reports of the incident and the last one I read several months ago indicated the entire group on board. That and the pictures of the "crash" and the covered bodies on the ramp sort of lead to the worst.
If there were any survivors they can consider themselves darn lucky people even if "out of work."
Speaking of that, can you imagine the ramifications to the aircraft industry with Continentals announcement yesterday to go along with that of United, American and Delta. Now fuel costs have surpassed labor costs in the airline industry "for the first time."
I expect that most of the economy in the northwest is connected in some way to Boeing aircraft.
Can't be many orders being filled in France by Airbus either. Wonder how much "tarmac" is left in the Arizona and California deserts for aircraft "parking?"

This will not happen. A tiny modicum of technical understanding about the speed sensor wires, and the effects of disabling them would tell you this.

plenty of info here:
http://priuschat.com/forums/audio-elect ... pdate.html

coastaletech.com also sells a product that will automatically hit the "I agree" and enable the NAV while in motion if you'd rather not do the wire cut/switch cheapo version. And your brakes will work just fine.

Just the thought of "speed sensor" wires would bother me!

I figured that out...but a little knowledge and understanding...even for someone without a lot of experience with electronics...and you can gain confidence.
There are speed sensor wires that, if cut, would do very bad things. But the ones we're cutting go only to non-critical accessories. The BT speed sensor wire goes to the MFD...cut it and the wheels on the Energy display stop turning, you don't see the 5 min bars...oh, and you can use the BT function.
The NAV speed sensor wire goes only to the NAV and enables the NAV when disrupted.

If you cut the speed sensor wire going to the Brake ECU...yea, you'll have problems. I don't recommend that!!

Hi Everyone,
There is a NO COST NO HACK option try it The 04-08 Prius has a Voice recognition option to input a destination and Bluetooth commands while in motion and other commands such as temperature test it by pushing the talk switch icon on the steering wheel the car will prompt you by asking "say a command" tell it say 72 degrees and it will set the climate control and other commands are available by again push the talk switch and saying help or look in the quick start guide in your manual set.

I found a demo video on you tube for the Lexus Prius Gen 5 Nav system Try it it works for me after also you Pre-program and address and activate by pushing the talk button and saying the word Home.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HaFVk-Oz14w

The voice system is sensitive to external noise so close the windows the mic is above the drivers head in the spare storage compartment
Use a normal tone don’t shout or whisper
It not the best I agree and its far from perfect
If you haven’t used it try it you might be able to use it
I also suspect a Lexus has better cabin acoustics and may have better results then the Prius

Here is info about the 06-08 Gen 5 NAV system from BOB RICHARDSON.COM 2006 voice recognition problems
link http://www.bobrichardson.com/prius_voice_problems.html

It may give you a way to test the voice levels on Nav system hardware to get best levels without distortion For the best recognition.
FOR ADVANCED USERS TREAT THIS INFO WITH CAUTION!!
Good Luck

I have an 05 prius and the steps to input info while the car is moving is as follows. Not sure if this works on 08 prius.

Go to Menu
Voice Menu
place your finger on the upper left corner then lower left corner then upper left cornet. The MFD will show a different information and press OVERRIDE for a few seconds. Then click on back and you should be able to input destination address while the car is in motion.
