Default Bluetooth - Add a Phone

We just got our Prius yesterday and are trying to connect our bluetooth phones. My husband and I can each connect our phone, but only one at a time. The manual says up to 6 phones can be connected, but we haven't found a screen that actually shows the "add a phone" option, so we've had to remove one phone to use the other. Am I missing something? When I go to Settings to choose a device, the screen shows 6 telephone icons. One shows the name of the connected device and the other 5 icons are empty and do not open when touched. Please help! Thanks.

Thanks but that doesn't help.

I have no trouble linking either my husband's motorola or my iPhone to the Prius. The problem is that I can't have them BOTH linked at the same time. The Prius manual says I can have up to 6 phones linked but doesn't say how to add additional devices after the first. The only options I find are either to replace or delete, not add. On line instructions say that to add another phone I should select the "Add a Phone" option but there is no such option on my screen. I have a 2008 Prius. Has anyone with a 2008 Prius successfully linked two phones to the car? Where is the "Add a Phone" button? The on line illustrations I've found seem to be for an older version of the bluetooth interface which has a clear "Add a Phone" selection button that doesn't show up on my screen.

You can only use one phone at a time. If you're both carrying a BT phone, only one can be used.

Thanks. but again, I don't think this is the problem.

I understand that only one phone can be USED at a time, but we should be able to have two phones registered at the same time, right? The interface shows 6 telephone icons (although I have only been able to assign a profile to one icon), and the manual says you can have up to 6 registered devices. I assumed this means I can register both of our phones, and whoever is using the car can connect his or her phone for the drive. As it stands now, we each have to re-register our device every time we get in the car. Is that how it works? If so, why would Prius give you the option to register 6 devices and why would earlier versions of the software include an "Add a Phone" button?

Yes, you can have up to six phones -registered- in the car. You have to manually select which one the car will look for. If you decide to change phones, you have to manually select the other phone on the MFD. Unless you manually select one of the six phones, you will not be able to use the bluetooth with the phone. In my experience, you will also have to enter the "1111" on the "next" phone when you change to it to pair it with the car. It leads you by the hand, but yes, it's not fully automatic.

Having the phone registered in the car helps because all you have to do is select it (on the MFD screen) and then tell the phone to pair with the car and enter the "1111" when asked to do so by the car. If the phone wasn't registered in the MFD you have to go through two steps to use it. You have to search for it, then enter it in the cars' system. Then you have to select it and "pair" it, by telling the phone to connect and then entering the "1111" when prompted to do so.

So having up to six phones -registered- saves you a step in getting the car to use the phone.

Thanks, but again, this is not my problem/question! I have no trouble pairing either of the two phones with the car. What I CANNOT do is have them both registered at the same time. I can't find the "add a phone" button, and in order to register my phone, I have to delete my husband's, and vice versa.

I find the screen with six telephone icons. One icon reflects the name of the currently registered phone. When you touch it, it selects the phone and you can use it. The other five icons are shown as blank, and when I touch one, nothing happens. I don't know how to assign an additional device to the next icon.

Is there anyone out there who can tell me where the "add a phone" button is? Is there anyone out there who actually has 2 bluetooth devices registered to the Prius at the same time?

I understand your frustration, and I'm afraid my answer won't help, but I was able to have two phones in the system in my '06. Maybe someone at your dealership could help?

acmeplant, try posting your question on PriusChat.com. It is a more active site. I'm sure you'll get an answer (along with some off-the-wall responses too).

I'm pretty sure you have the answer already. You CAN NOT have two phones active or using the bluetooth at the same time - in this case "using the bluetooth" does not mean you are using the phone, it means the phone is using the bluetooth. You -CAN- have up to six phones in the car memory, but you can't use them until you connect the bluetooth to them, and then -ONLY- one phone can be connected to the bluetooth at a time. You have to kill one, then start the other. This is a Bluetooth limitation, not a limitation of the Prius. When one phone is "registered" and actively using the bluetooth, no other device (phone) can use that bluetooth device (the car). Even if that phone is not being used, it is still "using" bluetooth to watch for "off hook" commands etc. and to send the ring to the car if the phone rings. To use another phone you have to stop that phone/car interface, ie - kill the bluetooth connection, -before- you can then start the bluetooth connection with another phone. The way to do this is to turn off bluetooth on the phone you want to disconnect (or just turn off the phone), then go through the "select phone" procedure from the MFD for the next phone.

You are confusing the bluetooth connection with using the phone. You have TWO connections to consider here, the bluetooth between the car and the phone, and the phone connection with the cell system.
