Default post a/c repair - lots of problems, please help!

Hi guys, Im in need of much help. I recently took my 05 prius to the neighborhood shop to get my a/c fixed. Dealer diagnosed an expansion valve and receiver drier replacement for $1500, my mechanic would do it for $600. After further inspection my mechanic thought the compressor was the problem because of the weird levels it was getting. He talked to a Toyota Mech. and was assured that it really is the expansion valve. He went ahead and replaced my expansion valve and replaced the small 12v bat for no charge.

When I went to pick it up the air was still blowing poorly and the brake, "!", ABS, CSV lights are now on. My mechanic cant turn them off. He suggests I go back to the dealer to see if it really is a compressor problem and get the lights fixed. Based on my mechanics findings, I trust he is right about the compressor.

as of now, the air gets better when you apply gas but when idle it just blows stale air. The a/c is electric so its suppose to consistent with or without gas. I'm also experiencing very low mileage, the battery is constantly on the low recharging itself. on top of that, the car isn't receiving the signal from my keys. the door wont open unless I actually press the button on the key remote and the car wont start unless I put the remote into the key slot. I made sure that the batteries are good in both key remotes and that other electronic devices were out of reach. still no signal

any suggestions here? what should I ask for and what to avoid at the dealership?

Noticed something - just got back from a 30 min test drive with windows down, a/c on and off at varying speeds

Whenever there are green arrows going to the battery, noticeably cooler air is received. I also receive expected mileage. I was driving for 10 mins on an even road going 30 - 35 trying to improve battery levels then hypermiling trying to achieve better mileage - this is when cooler air was being noticed. then I had to slow down to make a turn and suddenly my mileage dropped from a 99.9 to 7.9 and the air quickly turned stale. from that point on both battery and mileage was depleting rapidly. I speculate there is a correlation to a/c but this may be coincidental?

also...
With the windows down I'm hearing a 'thud' coming from the very back, sounds like under the car, after braking. It happens only occasionally. I cannot find a pattern or trigger but it sure is there and wasn't before.

This sounds like a mess. Take it to a Prius certified mechanic, most of whom are at dealers. A non-Prius mechanic can end up costing you more in wasted time, incorrect diagnoses, buying parts you didn't need, and even damage done. For example, did the neighborhood guy use the exclusive Toyota A/C oil, which must be used to avoid damaging the compressor?

My mechanic has the toyota service book so I assume he used what was called for in the book. I will make sure with him. The more I read up about this the more I suspect that the compressor was damaged before I even bought the car 2 yrs back. I bought it used and the a/c never performed the way it should. If the original owner used the wrong oil then I may very well have a bad compressor anyway - and according to my trustworthy mechanic, that seems to be the case.

I have to bring it back to the dealership..grrr...and will ask the zone manager about the compressor. it needs to be fixed noooow its over 100 here in houston.

I reason that you hoped the local guy could fix your car. $600.00 sounds a lot better than the Toyotas dealers $1500.
But as Richard has noted, once you own one of these cars you are practically "owned" by Toyota.
The service manual for a Prius is comprised of three manuals, each the size of a telephone book.
(The manual for my "Highlander" is one normal sized manual most garages have access too.)

if he didnt use ND-11 oil in the a/c system it would allow high voltage leaks in the compressor, thus damaging it, not to mention you have to replace all your components if its contaminated with ester oil

I suspect you have troubles with either the electric compressor or the high voltage battery system that drives the compressor. Toyota people should be able to tell if the compressor is drawing too much current or in fact the battery/inverter system is not delivering the required amount. This will take some measuring instruments that Toyota people should have and know how to use. Hopefully they will do the necessary troublshooting and not just guess and replace parts.

Default Prius A/C Repair Guy in Houston

This may be a little late for a lot of you, but I recently bought a 2005 Toyota Prius with the AC not working at all. I saw the quotes from the dealership, which the prior owner had gotten, and they were around $2000. I took it to Neil's Auto Air Service in Houston (713-688-2691). He was reluctant to work on a Prius because he never had before, but he agreed to try. He found out the compressor was bad. I asked him if he would let me buy a compressor on Ebay and have him install it. He agreed, so I bought a used compressor for around $200, and he installed it for another $200. It cost me a total of around $400 to have something fixed that should have cost around $2000. It has worked well for over a year. Just today I took my 2005 Prius back to Neil's Auto AC because I had a hole in the condenser. I had seen that other people paid around $600 to $800 to have this fixed. He welded the hole and refilled the condenser for $175. It's hard to find an independent auto AC repair guy who's willing to work on Toyota Prius, but he will work on it, and he does a great job.

Default ac repair pembroke pines

On a regular basis, these air conditioners, which are nothing but machines might need wear and tear checks as well as repair. If these services are sought from an irrelevant source, it might become awful. There are many factors including experience that an AC repair demands. Also a matter of privacy arises, when dealing with indoor AC unit repairs services visit: acrepair-pembrokepines.com/ here.
