Default check engine light on

Hi,
Lucky enough to find a 2001 prius with only 45,000 miles on it.
Advertised on Craigs list and hit the jackpot.
Have had it for 3 weeks now and I love it! I know... I am
preaching to the choir here.
Anyway, the check engine light went on about 5 days ago.
No other signs that something is wrong with the car, runs
great. Took it to Shucks, the code that reads out is
PO446. Don't really want to take it to the Toyota dealership
unless we have to. Is it something we can fix ourselves and
should we worry?
Thanks for your help.
Yours in the land of SMUG

They should read out the code for you at Advance Auto parts or similar for free and tell you what the code is in regards to.

This is a complete guess but I think that is an Evap code. Typically tripped by a bad gas cap.

As posted above, the manual lists:

P0446 - Evaporative Emission Control System Vent Control Malfunction

You would trip this code is you left the gas cap off or loose. It could also be a pinched hose, but check the cap first.
If it's just the cap the light will reset after a few start/shutdown cycles. Or you can disconnect the 12V battery -ve terminal and press the brake pedal to fully discharge any 12V power in the car. That should remove the light and the stored codes.

Or, you could purchase a Scangauge II and reset the code with that (and read out any new codes, and read up to four parameters all the time you are driving).
