Default Check engine light

In 31,500 miles, my Prius has been flawless until now. Driving to the airport in Burlington, VT to go to CA (where we are now in Venice for a week), the Check Engine light popped up on the dash. We were kind of alarmed but the car ran fine. I pulled over and checked the oil just to make sure it wasn't low...in fact, as a probably unrelated issue, it was 1/2 quart overfilled even though I made it clear in the 30,000 service not to overfill (but failed to check the level afterwards). Anyway, an appt. has been scheduled upon return for the Check Engine issue (and they'll also drain out the extra oil). The service person felt it was just an emissions issue.

Did you check the fueling cap? If that's loose, air can escape. The evaporative emissions system checks the seal by applying a vacuume, then seeing if it holds for a reasonable period of time. If not, the a DTC is flagged.
Most CEL issues are not debilitating. You can still drive, but it should be looked after as soon as reasonably possible.

Thanks DanMan...although I tighten the cap until it clicks a few times, I'll check the fueling cap upon my return.

Remove the cap and check for "foreign matter" on the gasket. Often, if you closed it until it clicked and you still get the mil (another name for the CEL) that's what it is.

Them foreigners cause lots of problems!

Of course, if you had a "Scangauge II" you could read the code and reset it at will.

Of coarse \your main problem upon returing is getting the beast to start. Don't believe the temp at Burlington airport has been above 10 degrees since you left so enjoy all that bright "smog."

UPDATE: when I returned from my trip, with the car running I checked the gas cap, wiped around it and put it back on with several clicks. The check engine light remained on. However, the next day, I believe, it was no longer on and hasn't been on since the 16th. I cancelled my appointment, mainly due to all the snow up here at the time. Perhaps it was the cap and only took effect after shutdown.

I believe that if a loose gas cap caused the problem, it takes a little while for the code to clear after the cap is tightened. What you experienced sounds normal.

It takes 3 trips with no fault found before the light will be turned off.
A trip is defined as powering up to READY, then powering off.
The code will still be stored internally for a few more trips.
