Default Master warning light

Hi,

I haven't been online here for awhile.

This week, I started experiencing a flashing of the master warning light while driving. It flashes, along with a beep, then stops. It has happened intermittantly for the last couple of days.

There is no good description of what this light means in the book, and I called dealer and they said it may be an open door, which shifts when I drive and the car shifts to one side. That made good sense...but I have opened and reclosed all doors and trunk now several times and it makes no diference.

It seems as if the light flashes when I am torquing the steering wheel on a curve..the light is always off when I drive straight. Yet it has also flashed as I approached a stop.

I am taking it in tomorrow, but am sure it will not do it when they drive it!

Help - if you have had this experience.

This car is a 2004, I bout it in 2005 and it is a year old.

If it was an open door, you would see a msg on the MFD saying not to leave the car in neutral and to put the car in park instead. You can't miss that message, it's as blatant as the 'I Agree' message (but no button to push).

The dealer will have to check for codes. Also often there will be an icon in the MFD indicating the general area of the problem.

Default master warning light

If anyone is interested. My car was still under warrantly so there was no charge for checking out this intermittant light/beep. I was told nothing at all is wrong - there were some 'old codes' stored in the system, perhaps because I had taken my car to 'Jiffy Lube' instead of dealer : )

In any case it has not been out for a long drive yet and I look forward to seeing how it behaves tomorrow.

That shouldn't be. The master warning light, or even the Check Engine Light only illuminates if a situation occured or persists. It is true that a warning lamp will extinguish a few trips after the conditions that caused the code go away, yet the code remains stored. However if it illuminates again, the condition has re-appeared and should be looked into.

Unless you are talking about the Maint Req. which illuminates and blinks briefly after startup at about 4500 miles from last reset, then remains on after 5000 from last reset. This is an oil change reminder. Many non-dealer places don't know about this, or forget. I had to reset mine after having my oil changed at GoodYear.

I've heard of several Classic Prius that have had a check engine light, and by the time it is seen by the dealer the light has gone out, and so have the codes...

(Happened on my 2001 with the P1436 code, but since I wasn't watching the tech, I can't say if they saw no check engine light and didn't bother looking for codes or actually checked and found no codes...)

Well, the problem was not solved. Next day light/beep started going off just as before if not worse. I am taking the car in AGAIN this Friday. In the meantime I have had time to pay attention to when it happens.

(Note, it is not the oil change or check engine light, it is the master light which is an exclamation point in a triangle, no message, and it also beeps which is maddening)

Going straight, no incline, never happens. It seems to occur when on curves, over 30mph, and almost always decelleration (with or without braking) is involved AND an incline, usually down. I am suspecting it is possibly flashing with the antilock brakes engage or sense something but WHY??? This is not the warning for brake problems.

It happens every day at one particular curve and two stops when I get off the highway at work. But of course that is 45mi away rom the dealer!

Anyway, this is highly annoying.

Find an autoparts store or some other place that will extract codes for free. It is possible that by the time you get to the dealer, the codes may clear by the time you get there, depending on how many trips you take between the condition occuring and getting to the dealer, the severity of the trouble, etc. It shouldn't clear that soon, but it might.

Any symbols show up on the MFD when this occurs?

Update: Upon leaving work today the flashing of the light (with beeping) was extremely frequent and lasted longer than ever before. It did this just about everytime I turned or stopped and often in between as well. Again, once on the highway it subsided, but more of the same on getting off the highway.

At one point when first starting out, an oilcan flashed on the MFD (upper left corner). Then a few flashes of the same exclamation point. No symbol has appeared before or since that one time.

My appt with dealer is tomorrow morning and none too soon, I would not have driven the car again after today.

Upon test driving this car they will be sure to experience the problem firsthand.

Sigh.

Oilcan symbol, huh? That symbol indicates low oil pressure. Did you check your oil level? Perhaps Jiffy lube used incorrect viscosity oil, or didn't tighten the drain plug sufficiently, or didn't fill adequately.

If oil level is low, or incorrect viscosity, high speed RPM will keep the pressure up, but idle may trip the low pressure switch, as might at turns when the oil sloshes around.

What Dan wrote. At the very least, regardless of what codes the dealer finds or does not find, have them change the oil and filter, and check the two different coolants.

Along with the usual assortment of monkeys at the oil change places there are lots of well-meaning folks who just don't know enough about the Prius. I take mine to a dealer for all service. Saving a few dollars is not worth any risk.
