Default CD player

The cd player on my 2004 stopped "accepting to play" CD's. I have a can of compressed air and gave it a few shots that restored it but only momentarily.

A repeat blast of air has not resolved the problem it still refuses to play any of my CD's

So how do I fix this...on my own.

How would I remove the CD player if need be. Is it something that a certified Toyota dealer needs to do. We have one here in David, Panama but as far as I know they are not selling the Prius in the country yet. I have had the oil changed there but that's about it. I've had to show them how to stop and start it and how to reset the maintenance light.

suggestions?

I also have another little annoyance. The glass over the display screen has what looks like a smear of grease edging out from the left side. ... that obscures a fraction of the gas gauge read out. This glass/plastic covering is "not" the primary viewing cover.... it is a secondary one set back beneath the primary viewing cover. It's looks like I'd have to remove the whole window dash covering to get to it. Is this the situation or is there an easier way that I can get to this to clean it?

suggestions

thank you

do you have a lot of moisture buildup in your car, a great example would be if your windshield fogs up on dry days.
this woudl cause cd player problems

the CD player comes off the dash once the vents pop of on each side.

ill have to get repair manaul page scanned

no fogging as you describe.

We're just entering the rainy season... it's been unusually dry for this time of year.

The CD player for a long time has been funky... refusing those CD's I burn compared to those we purchase.

Yes that would be very helpful if you could post or send me images from the repair manual of how to access the CD player.

HI Craig,

If the CD player consistently plays store bought CDís there may be nothing wrong with the CD player in your Prius. Out of curiosity what is the make and model of the CD player in the Prius does it state on the front bezel CDR OR CDRW or MP3???

As well as the Make, Model, Firmware version of you CD burner and it date of manufacture or purchase date for the year what software do you use to make the CDís
And the brand of CDíS you use
and are you now burning MP3'S

Did it used to play your older CDís you burned??? Or play your older CD you burned???

Nice to meet you !!!

It's raining outside or I'd run out to see if it says the make on it. It came with the 2004 Prius.

Right now it simply rejecting just about anything I put in it. It does seem...I know you're going to wounder how I could possible do this.. but if I apply some pressure as the CD as it is pulled in to make it say go right of center or say angle it up ever so slightly as it's pulled in that I can get a CD that it has just rejected to play. .. Then it might play the first track but keep repeating itself as it slowly works it way through a song.

I'd really like to know how to pull this CD player. Looking at the panel it's not very obvious to me what comes off and how to pull the player.

Anyone with this experience would be appreciated... and or scans of a manual on how to do this.

My wife leaves for the states on the 23rd. It be nice if I could have her take this back with her and get it exchanged or fixed.

Hi Craig,

Since it does not play regular CD as well as CDR or CDRW it sounds like you need to replace it I looked in my 04 service Manual for hours for dashboard removal to get at the player couldnot find it I think you need to remove the entire dash to get at it I think they started with the CD player and built the Prius around it!!

You might Be able to find the info on Google
found this link to a bunch of Prius info

http://www.torrentz.com/de8d8f77c183719 ... d2520a9a99

look at the list of info in that compressed file
but you also need to install the bit torrent client software to download the file make sure you antivirus and spyware software are up to date
After you download it scan all files and uninstall the bit torrent client software afterward

Also bit torrent is a file sharing protocol and may take several hours to download the file

One other Idea is try contacting a dealer where your wife is coming into the states maybe they can tell you how to remove it to exchange or fix it or Contact Toyota get the number off the web.

Good Luck

I use utorrent a lot. It's how I get movies for viewing here in the back country of Panama.

Yes it seem very illusive about where and how one cracks open the panels to remove the CD Player.

My wife takes off for the states tomorrow.. I don't think I'll make it into dashboard guts by then.

Yes I came to the same conclusion that the CD player needs replaced.

The panel below it that covers the divider between passenger and drives space has one plastic lock. It's one of those that once you remove it you better have another one to replace it with. I'm not sure if this is where I make my attempt to pull apart things to remove the CD player or not. I just might call up a service center in the states to see if they can or are willing to advise me.

thanks

Solution!

Buying an Ipod with a FM transmitter.

If that doesn't work then I'll tap into the speaker wiring with a jack that I can connect the Ipod to

Are you aware that the visible display is a reflected image? The actual display is located directly in front of the apparent position of the display, and faces up. You can see it more easily by looking down through the windshield from outside the car. The smudge may be there, in which case you can clean it away without taking anything apart.

To pull the CD player you need to start at the drivers side and remove the air vent. Then remove the lower and upper dash panels, and the vent to the left of the CD player. You will also need to pull the air vent to the right of the radio. You will now have access to the two 10mm bolts that go into the top of the MFD. Remove them. Remove the panel that goes between the center lower dash and the carpet, and remove the screws at the bottom of the radio. Now remove the MFD, and remove the radio upper screws. The radio unit can now be pulled out.

I may have missed a step or two here, but this is the general process. Take your time, use firm but careful pressures, and you can easily remove the radio without damaging anything. If you have a climate controlled garage, it makes this job much easier.

Try searching eBay for a new OEM CD Player. You will likely have to go to to dealer to get one, as the proprietary nature of the Prius dash and CD player drastically reduces the number of people that remove these to replace them with aftermarket units.

Good luck.
