Default Does the JBL 6 Disc Changer Play the MP3 Format?

Has anyone tried playing back a home burned CD containing MP3 files in their Prius' JBL 6 disc changer? I had seen a thread about the problems in connecting an MP3 player into the basic sound system, but I don't recall anyone mentioning the formats that the premium system handles.

Thanks for your response!

I have not tried this. It says nothing in the user manuals about playing MP3's. Normally, such a feature would be trumpeted and highlighted as a benefit, so I have assumed that it's not in the Prius.

Anybody with the guts to test it? I don't think it would, but I don't want to take even a small risk of jamming my CD changer.

As far as i know, most car stereos play burned CDs, but to avoid problems they should be burned at a very low speed.

I burned a cd of music files off of napster, and several sound effects mp3 files, the CD plays just fine.

I just burned a CD full of MP3 files using Roxio's Toast and took it out to the car to test it. Didn't work. I recall reading somewhere that the JBL system won't play MP3s. So Gene, are you SURE that those files on your CD are in fact MP3s, or did they perhaps get converted to straight audio files during the burn?

And if they are MP3s, how did you burn that disk?

I would argue that the poster intended to say that he burned a CD from MP3s, not of MP3s. Thus, he's playing a standard CDA.

Mike,

Actually, no. Many of the newer automobile audio systems are capable of playing MP3 files that have been burned onto a CD-R. I was curious if the JBL system would play MP3 files without conversion to CDA. From other reponses it sounds like it probably won't -- I'll need to convert the MP3 files to CD audio -- or use my 20gb portable hard drive and an FM modulator! I also wish that they'd put an 1/8" mini-plug connection on the front so you could use an auxiliary audio source. Perhaps there's a bluetooth solution!

I hope that I'll be able to verify the MP3 compatibility for myself by the weekend! My silver #9 was supposed to have been here May 12. I spoke to the dealer and he said "the car got held up in port"! He also said it was supposed to be here today. No sign yet, but perhaps the truck will show up tomorrow! I've got my fingers and toes crossed!

Thanks to all for your comments.

WB--

My real intention was to point out that GENE had burned to CDA, not the original poster. Read: sure, you can burn MP3s to CDA and play 'em, but unless the system says "Plays MP3s" all over it (what manufacturer would leave THAT off?), it probably WON'T. There seemed to be some misconception as the thread progressed, to which I respond: If you've converted an MP3 to CDA, it's just not an MP3 anymore. You're now asking the question, "will my CD player play CD-R discs."

Oh, and no, the JBL system WON'T play MP3s. Done that. Verified.

Cripes. All these pronouns and dangling thingies make forum threads a mess.
