Default Prius engine sound

I'm thinking of getting a Prius but my concern is the car
is silent at low speed so pedestrian, especially
blind people who rely on their hearing can't hear a Prius coming.

What do you think?

I think there have been no reports of blind people being hit by Priuses.

In the next few years we are supposed to have all electric cars again, not to mention the ones still on the road. i don't imagine hydrogen fuel cell powered cars will make much noise either. The Prius makes enough noise with the contact of tires on pavement, etc. that pedestrians are aware of the approach. A lot of modern cars have very quiet engines, especially when idling along through parking lots.
Perhaps of more concern should be pedestrians talking on cellphones and not paying any attention to what is happening around them.
When I was a kid, there was a safety campaign in the schools that warned: "Stop, look and listen, before you cross the street!" Still works for me!

Darwinism.

No really half the people out there have ipods plugged into their ears and couldn't hear an elephant stampede coming their way. Thin the heard.

I have heard of this concern as well but a good friend of mine is blind and when I asked him he said as long as the cars are obeying the traffic signals his guide dog knows when to help him cross the street and the sound of the car isn't the problem as much as it is a driver not following traffic signals. Or his other big concern is the number of cross walk signals that are not automated. I would not be concerned about my engine sound as much as just being careful when driving.

The funny thing is that the Subaru Forester my wife drives idles so quietly that when I have the A/C fan on full blast in my Prius, it's louder than the Forester with A/C off from the outside.

Owner of 'Eeyore', a 2004 Prius. Only took 2 days from start of search to delivery.

8 years of ownership, 115,000 miles, about 40 MPG average at present.

If you're really concerned about it, why not install a cow bell on your hood?

Driving slowly, as around parking lots, I find the sound with the windows down no different than any other new car. They are all practically the same. You can't tell the V6 in the Highlander is running at "idle" without looking at the tach.
So I believe it safe to say that an electric car is no quieter when moving than any other. Something I probably would never have said before buying the Prius.
