Default thef deterrant light keeps flashing

I have an american '07 Prius package 2. The hybrid vehicle immobilizer/theft deterrent system indicator, red car dash icon with a black key inside, keeps flashing and has not stopped. I have completely shut all doors, hood and trunk. I started to notice the lit icon after filling the gas tank at a service station. I checked the fuel cap and the door, both ok. It only stops when I put the key fob in the ignition. The owners manual was little help.

I phoned the local Toyota dealer about this, he said he would check on it and get back to me. That was 6 hours ago. Seems the Service Department knows very little about the '07 Prius.

Is the continued flashing of this indicator normal, it was not doing this before. Anybody have any ideas?

Is this while you are driving? Does the car start without the fob in the slot?

It's normal. I bet it was always doing that, it's easy not to notice (but once you notice it you can't help continuing to notice it).

Why is it normal to have a continuing flashing warning light and can a smart service dept. immobilize it.
That's like the large sign on the consol on my Highlander that says "passenger airbag armed" when a passenger sits in front seat.
If it ever failed to light I would never notice that it had not.
Can we not take it for granted that when the car was moving all the airbags were armed? That would be more of a high tech improvement and is now expected of "all" airbag equipped cars.
When my wife noticed it the first time we had the car out at night she said "OH, OH," when is it going to deploy?

Uhh, guys: that's a feature, not a bug. It's telling everyone who looks in that there *is* a theft deterrent system. That in itself is part of the deterrent!

It's normal, it was designed that way, and it's a "good thing". It tells potential thieves:
"the immobilizer is on and functioning. There may be an alarm. Don't mess with me."

If the led doesn't flash take note. You may have left the fob in the car.

You mean it flashes "all the time" the car is being used? Even driving, as the post indicates. And only extinguishes when a fob is inserted in the dash.
Would have thought that even a Toyota salesman would have recognized how their deterrant systems work.

Okay, if it's running while the car is on and moving, that is a bug. It should be always on when the car is off, that's a feature. Clear now?
