Hm... either my sums have been wrong, or Toyota sold more vehicles than they've been reporting in their monthly press releases...

"Toyota/Lexus hybrid sales from January 1, 2006 through May 31, 2006 totaled 68,637."
http://www.toyota.com/prius/tax.html
http://www.toyota.com/camry/tax.html
http://www.toyota.com/highlander/tax.html
http://www.lexus.com/models/popup_taxCredit.html

"The Quarterly Report of Qualified Vehicles for the Alternative Motor Vehicle Credit for the quarter ending March 31, 2006, shows that Toyota (which owns Lexus) sold 41,779 qualifying vehicles to retail dealers."
http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,, ... 60,00.html

Or maybe Toyota has it wrong, as my July cumulative sales numbers add up...

"TMS calendar-year-to-date hybrid sales broke the 100,000-unit sales milestone, reporting 105,808 hybrid units. In July, hybrids sales totaled 20,298 units."

Wow! So over 80% of GS sales are Hybrids?!? Ah, it looks like you are only counting the GS 430. You really should count the whole GS line, as the only major difference between the 430 and the 300 is the engine. Well, the 430 comes with some features as standard that are optional on the 300; but the 450h is similar, in that it's just an upgraded 300. (Which for 2007 will be the 350, as Lexus has upgraded the 'low-end' model as well.)

Oh, and one idea to make the columns look decent is to use the 'Code' tag:

Code:

Owner of 'Eeyore', a 2004 Prius. Only took 2 days from start of search to delivery.

8 years of ownership, 115,000 miles, about 40 MPG average at present.

In the Toyota monthly sales press releases, the GS 350 is listed separately, while the GS 430 and the GS 450H are listed together. So, my posted values are only of the GS 430/450H, and not for the entire GS line.

This hasn't been updated recently, and I can see why, since Toyota's two most recent sales press releases haven't fully broken out hybrid sales (especially the GS450H). This is what I can gather from them:

Prius
Dec. '06 9,291 (total 2006: 106,971)
Jan. '07 8,299

Camry Hybrid
Dec. '06 4,057 (guesstimated - total of Camry Hybrid and GS450H Hybrid is 4,257)
Jan. '07 2,801

Highlander Hybrid
Dec. '06 2,354
Jan. '07 1,810

RX 400H
Dec. '06 1,981
Jan. '07 1,245

GS450H
Dec. '06 200 (guesstimated - see Camry Hybrid above)
Jan. '07 167 (total sales minus sales attributable to other hybrid models)

Total 2006 hybrid sales: 191,742 units. Total 2005 hybrid sales: 146,512 units.

In December 2006, TMS posted sales of 17,883 hybrid vehicles.

In January 2007, TMS posted sales of 14,322 hybrid vehicles.

If you're looking for more general US hybrid sales figures, I'd recommend:

http://www.greencarcongress.com/hybrids/index.html
This is a blog site, which will list the monthly hybrid sales and commentary at the beginning of the month, for Toyota/Lexus, Honda, Ford/Mercury, and Nissan, in pretty graph form. No sales for GM/Chevrolet/Saturn, as they do not publish break-outs of their hybrid models.

http://www.hybridcars.com/market-dashboard.html
again, find the monthly sales data that you're interested in, and not only will you find overview and forward commentary, but on some of the tabs you can find pretty graphs and pie charts, and US regional hybrid registration data.

If I were an automotive journalist, I'd get started on that "Toyota Sells 500,000th Prius in the U.S." article. It will occur either this month or next.

Among the quirks of the 2nd-generation sales figures: How often, in the history of the automobile, has a car sold more units in its fourth model year than in its first two model years combined? I bet you'd have to go back several decades at least.

Another factoid: It took over five-and-a-half years to reach 250,000 U.S. Priuses, both 1st-gen and 2nd (June '00 to Feb. '06); it will have taken only 21 or 22 months to double that.
