Default Accented English and NAV

I have a friend waiting on "the list" expecting his Prius in January. He is from Mexico and speaks English with a moderate accent. Will he have more trouble with the NAV than native English speakers?

Might. The lexicon of the car even eludes me sometimes. He will need to learn how to speak "Pri" otherwise really funky things will result. He'll need to check the HELP screen in the NAV window and see what he can say for it to respond to. He may need to learn "Pri Speak" and see what develops.

Myself, I never can remember some of the vocabulary the car needs to hear. "Delete POI," no that's not it. "Clear POIs?" Dunno. It gets confusing at times. I do know "Screen Off" though and maybe "Next Track."

Too bad the thing cannot learn your way of speaking much as some software programs do. Sometimes it seems I just argue with that "woman under the dash" who often spins my request into something else entirely....gee, just like home!

Will your friend who speaks English with a noticeable accent have trouble with the talking car feature? I speak pretty decent English (at times). Here's a transcript of my most recent conversation with the lady who lives in my Prius:

Me: Gas Station.

Prius Lady: System showing Gas station icons!

Me: POI off.

Lady: Radio off!

Me: POI off.

Lady: Temperature 67 degrees!

Me: POI OFF!!

Lady: System showing coffee house icons!

I think in the end it has a lot to do with your rate of speech. Finding the right speed with which to speak to the car is important.

evaunit, I've had the same conversation and I don't have an accent to speak of!

I might guess that a non-native speaker might do at least as well as a native speaker due to being more aware of the sound structure of the language. I suspect that the software must use some of the same phonetic information that would be presented in a language class.

Intonation does seem to be important, and background noise really confuses the system (ever try issuing a voice command while in reverse?). Clear distinct speech helps, too. Think Harry Potter and the flue powder... "diagonally vs. Diagon Alley".

Dang! The same lady lives in your car too?

I wonder who the fluent English person was that the car understands?

Yeah, flue powder is pretty unreliable. I prefer a portkey myself...

Nerdius maximus! That's my comment on Potter fans.

(and btw, according to the books, it's "floo" powder, not flue.)
