My husband just took our Prius in for its first oil change at 5000 miles. He took it to a quick lube place- where they didn't turn off the maintenance light. We have followed the instructions in the manual to no avail- the light remains on. Any advice?
The manual never tells the most important parts of the fixes. As we ALL know, you have to walk around the car twice, counter clockwise, and kick the left front tire. Some even suggest sacrificing a chicken (dumplings and carrots recommended).
If THAT doesn't work, I don't know what to tell you.
Don't know if it will make you feel any better but I have never heard of the procedure in the manual "not working." (as long as it is used in conjunction with kicking the left front tire.)
Exactly what steps are you taking, and what is the ODO showing before you start (ODO, Trip A, Trip B)?
I didn't do it- but watched my husband try it several times- doing the precise intricacies that the manual specifies- to no avail. The ODO was at 000 for the trip A/B thing, I believe.
Ah, there's the problem. Needs to be on ODO, not Trip A/B.
Page 122 of 2004 manual:
1. Press the “POWER” switch to the
“OFF” mode with the odometer reading
shown. (For details, see “Odometer and
two trip meters” on page 115.)
2. Press the “POWER” switch twice [without pressing the brake] to
select the “IG–ON” mode while holding
down the trip meter reset button.
Hold down the [trip meter] button for at least 5 seconds.
The odometer indicates “000000”
and the light goes off.
For step two, be sure you are not pressing the brake pedal, or else you will go to READY, then Off, rather than ACC then Ig-On.
Hmm, Knowing the way the car is designed, (what sensors various ECUs are interested in), I suppose it is possible, but seems unlikely. But I will admit, I can't say it isn't true.
I've also heard that it won't work on a Wednesday. I think it's because the little guy inside who turns the light off is out playing golf. But I'm not sure if that's true.
