Default Tire replacement recommendations?

Hello, I have almost reached 50k miles, and am looking to replace my tires. Does anyone have any recommendations for brands of tires that offer the best quality for the money? Falken was recommended by a mechanic...parts/labor around $580 in SoCal. Does anyone know if that is a good price and brand?
Thanks!! K

I've heard good things about the Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max. My brother-in-law has them on his '06 and likes them. When I'm ready for new tires on my '09, I will probably go the Fuel Max route also.

Deep snow is a factor where we live and with a long, steep driveway, traction is a priority. Early last winter, we replaced our worn-out Pirelli P4 Four Seasons, which came on our 2005 CPO Prius, with Nokian WR G2 tires on all four corners. Amazing! You'd think we had all-wheel-drive the way it went through the snow. The WR G2 is an all season tire with a difference: to my knowledge, it is the only all season tire bearing the "severe service emblem" with the mountain and snowflake, qualifying it as an actual snow tire. We have kept them on, it is now July, the MPG is as good, if not better, than previous. They are a great 50.000 mile tire that I can definitely recommend.

I replaced OEM tires in the 40,000's with Bridgestone Ecopia and saved $25 per tire over Michelin's Fuel Saver. Good results - 1 mpg better than old tires. (53 in normal 45-65 mph driving). I now have an actual 51.5 mpg for 60,000 miles, due to some trips at 80 mph.

If you live in southern California, I would guess that you don't see snow or ice very often. If you drive mostly on dry roads or in rainy conditions, the Michelin HydroEdge is a very long lasting tire. I have gone through two sets on my 2002 Prius and have been very satisfied. Both sets had about 70k on them when replace, and would probably have run the 80k miles advertised. However, I elected to change them early due to safety concerns on summer, southwest desert roadtrips. If I only used my Prius for in-town commutes, I would have left them on and run them completely down to the wear bars, which would have been another 5-10k miles.

Michelins cost a little more than Bridgestones, which are offering significant rebates now, I think. However, I trust the Michelin brand (from personal experience with them on all of our vehicles). So, if you can wait, Michelin has similar rebate offers a couple of times a year. As a matter of fact, I think they were offering $70 back on a set of four tires back in July.

By the way, the HydroEdges are rated at 44 psi; and I run 44/42 to maximize fuel economy. Also, the tires wear very evenly at this pressure.

The Fuel Max tires on our '06 got VERY loud about halfway through their tread life. I just replaced them with Ecopia's which are so much quieter it's unbelievable. Not enough mileage to know how long they'll last but a friend has them on his EV (Saturn) and loves them.

Replaced the second set of Michelin HydroEdges with Michelin X Radials (from Costco), due to age. HydroEdges would have run 70-80k, but with weather-checking, was worried about an upcoming roadtrip and lots of highway driving; so replaced them at around 65k miles. Unfortunately, HydroEdges are no longer made in a size to fit our 2002 Prius, so had to switch to another Michelin tire. No significant difference in road noise or fuel economy after 2k roadtrip. The X-Radials should also last 80k, but will probably die due to age like the HydroEdges.
