Default 2008 Prius Won't Stay in Gear

I'm having a recurring problem where my Prius won't go into Drive, Reverse, or even Park. It only happens occassionally and usually on warm days when it's been parked for several hours. Sometimes, it will work after several tries, but not always. Once, I waited for a tow truck for 2 hours, then tried it again and it shifted just fine.

Yesterday, I tried for 30 minutes and finally got it to shift into gear. Then when I got out on the freeway, it popped into neutral at full speed! It was terrifying, and I'm now afraid to drive the car.

I've had it in the shop twice. They can't reproduce the problem and won't work on it until they can. I am so fed up and want to trade it in for something more reliable (i.e. not a Toyota), but the I would lose money because the resale value is so pathetic.

Has anyone else had this problem? Here's a video...

Hi, snuese,

Maybe it's just my imagination, but in your video I can't see the word "READY" next to the "0" (zero) speedometer reading. I wonder if that is what is preventing your Prius from going into gear. Is the word "READY" showing up or is it just my poor eyesight? If "READY" is not showing up then it would be up to the dealer to determine why it isn't. Hopefully they will be able to see your video too (you've got your documentation now).

Yes, the Ready light is on. It's mostly cropped out of the right side of the shot, but it flashes into view about 35-seconds in. I'll try to show it better in the next video. This problem only happens occasionally, on warm days when the car's been sitting for several hours.

Ken,
The "ready" light is lit as the camera moves in close, just to the right of the fuel guage.

All right, snuese & Roger,

I believe both of you, although I still can't see it even after viewing the video again. I haven't been around any other year Priuses except my 2005, so I didn't realize the display had also changed as much (I knew the MFD was different from reading that here on this site). I was expecting to see the "READY" next to the "0" on the speedometer, but even though I can see the fuel guage, I still can't seem to see the word "READY" in the video. That's all right though because I'm not disputing it. It's just that I didn't see it & I thought it might have been the issue behind/causing your problem. I hope it gets resolved for you soon, especially after the dealer sees your video. Good luck!!

Ken,
The "ready" light shows only briefly as she zooms in on the shift indicator. The light is with the others for tire pressure, traction control, etc. to the right of the area where the speedometer, odometer and fuel guage are located.

Hey, Roger,

This seems silly of me to waste everybody's time with my posts here, but I cleaned the dust buildup off my computer screen with some glass cleaner & I can see a little better now. At first I had thought what I dimly saw beneath the fuel guage was the "READY" light, but as I watched her video closer I realized it was the odometer reading (you see, I haven't seen any newer Prius than my 2005 (other than the 2010 in the dealer's showroom), so with the display being different than mine, I didn't know where to look for it.

I believe I can see it now at 37 seconds into the video. Is the greenish lettering just above the red passenger airbag light the elusive "READY" light? (I still can't quite make it out even with the cleaner screen, but I'm sure if I had driven or owned a 2006 or newer Prius I'd know exactly where to look---I didn't know they changed the speedometer screen layout when they changed the MFD resolution in 2006).

Yep, it is the green light that you are seeing. I wouldn't have known either had I not sold my '04 and bought my '06 with the re-configured dash. I wouldn't worry about taking up time or space on this forum anymore, as there is hardly anyone here!

Hey, Roger,

I hope you had a nice weekend. Mine was nice working our dog club's dog show on Sat., an antique car & WWII warbird gathering on Sun., & being part of a parade followed by a cookout on Monday. I haven't really been taking up a lot of space on this site recently by making posts (except in this thread), but I have been spending a lot of time here [not that there are a lot of new posts from our members---thank goodness for people like you, firepa63, hyperion, jeromep, ehurtley, Hep, Phoenix, Asian Brad, KTPhil, melgish, richard schumacher & our Canadian member David Beale & some of the others (I'm sorry if I missed any of your names) who still keep a watch on this site] behind the scenes. You see, I've been very busy reading "new" posts to determine if they are legitimate (for approval) or if they are spams that need deletion (& their authors & IP addresses banned). In the last 2 weeks I've banned 180 authors & around double that for the IP addresses (due to their using multiple IP addresses). I'm trying to keep this site clean enough in the hopes that some of our other members will come back here & start contributing again.

Good for you, Ken, and kudos for all your efforts. I occasionally see a recent post that doesn't belong, and I report the offending post. I miss the days when this forum was busy and one could find several new quality postings every day. Sigh..........
