Default Traction Battery Cost

Replacement costs drop for hybrid batteries:

A frequently voiced concern about hybrids centers around the high cost of replacement batteries, which have ranged up to about $3,000. Now some relief may be on the way. Toyota announced last month that it has reduced the price of replacement batteries for the current (2002-2009) Prius by $686, to $2,299. Batteries for the first-generation Prius dropped $397 to $2,588.

$2,300 is still a lot of money for a single component. That would be like replacing the engine. The best bet is still probably buying a salvaged unit.

When these things start failing in large numbers as they will have to some day soon, I would expect to see quite a market for "re-built" battery packs a lot less expensive than "new" and probably with something like "five year" warranties.

Post tracton battery

my 01 prius traction battery failed at 137000 and I removed it & took the cover off to check which cells were bad found about 10 cells weak and replaced them with used cell that had checked good. Reinstalled and this fix lasted about 20000 miles and started getting battery codes again. This is the problem with used batteries and cells once the cells start to go bad it just gets worse. I have been checking and Dorman products has started to market rebuilt battery units with a three year warranty for less than 2000 with exchange and it has all new version three cells in it. The battery is not hard to change they have a video on the Dorman web site for all version cars and the new unit is fully tested.

The traction battery in our 2002 Prius failed over this past summer. The dealer and Toyota absorbed part of the replacement cost, and I only paid about $1,850 (if my memory is correct). And, this was for a brand-new Toyota battery. However, I should note that the list price for parts and labor was about double this price.

We got a significant discount due to buying three Toyotas from this dealer and having them all serviced regularly in their service department; so customer loyalty does pay...
