Default Dashboard warning lights

My 2002 Prius has developed a nasty, inconsistent probelm. The dashboard lights (Master, Hybrid, and Check Engine) pop on every now and then when we start the car. The lights are not flashing and on the two times we've brought the car to the local dealership they are baffled at the cause. The mechanic last week suggested a new computer at the tune of a cool $1000 without guarantee that it would fix the problem. The car is over 100,000 miles and we are deciding whether to scrap it or not. Any ideas? What can you tell me about a TSB regarding the check engine light? We bought the Prius used and I don't know if it was reprogrammed. Did we miss a computer upgrade, and if so, is it too late to get one?

Have you ever replaced your 12V battery?

I had similar symptoms when the hybrid module was overheating due to failure of the coolant pump. Not sure if this is your problem, but it might be worth having the dealer check it out.

If your dealer can't find the problem, take it to another one; but don't let them experiment on your dime (like replacing the computer, when they aren't sure that's it). Ask them to have Toyota send a tech out to troubleshoot the problem. After you find and fix the problem, you will probably have many more years of good service from your car. That's what I'm counting on from our 2002. We plan on keeping it at least 10-12 years, like the other Toyotas we've owned.
