Default Prius Auto on/off headlights

I am considering purchasing a brand new 2007 Pruius with the package 6. I was wondering if the lights are auto on/off or if they will automatically turn off if you forgot to turn the off. Please let me know if you have this information. Thanks for your help.

They really aren't auto on/off in the way that you would expect. They will automatically turn off if you forget to do it yourself, as long as you don't open the car door before you shut the car off (I know it's weird). They will, however, come on when you turn the car back on, even if it isn't dark out. This isn't the same as daytime running lights, where only the headlamps come on, and only at a reduced intensity. The come on at full brightness and the taillights come on as well.

They're AUTO-OFF only. They're not fully automatic.

Incorrect, at least for my 07.

I just went and did it. With the car in "Ready" and the headlights on, I opened the door (lights stayed on) and then hit the Power button (lights went off). I then locked the doors and closed the driver's door, and everything is fine.

Adam is correct. If you turn the lights on after the car is off, they will stay on. As an oddity that will probably never happen, should you turn the car off and the climb out the passenger door, they will stay on.

hey, I resent that!

I have gotten out the passenger side on several occasions. Tight parking spots and not wanting to wait for the traffic to clear (roadside parking) are a few reasons why.

LOL... I can see doing that on a 72 Toronado with a bench seat and no drive shaft hump but I kind of assumed that not many people would climb over that ceneter console to get out...

I hope you made sure your lights were off!

I've gone out to get a CD out of the player, got in the passenger side (closest to me) turned on the car and ejected the disc and then turned off the car. Get out the passenger side and the lights don't go off. Luckily in the garage it was too obvious, even for me, to miss.

Lights go off when powered off and driver door opened, in either order but both must occur to trigger the lights to go off.
Lights will come out of Auto Off if the taillight switch state changes, or if power state changes. Either may occur to cancel Auto-Off, both are not required.

it's not that high. Plus that space between the cupholders and the dash helps get your legs across!
