Default Gas gauge doesn't go up after adding fuel?

Has anybody ever seen it where the fuel gauge doesn't go up after adding fuel? Our '06 was at half a tank. I filled it to full and drove off, but the fuel gauge never went up in 15+ minutes of driving. When I got home I turned the car off and back on again, and it still didn't go up. When my wife drove the car to work the next day it went up and now reads fine.

Just a temporary glitch, probably? Worth mentioning to the dealer? (Only 7500+ miles on the car.)

Just curious!

I was going to ask how much you put in, but then I re-read your post and realized you had a half of a tank.

But then, half a tank is about 3 or 4 gallons, depending how full the tank was originally. The guage is reluctant to register fills of less than 3 gallons.

I have completely given up on the gas gauge, and only give it any credence when it's down to 2 pips, which is when I feel it's time to fill. The last 2 pips disappear to 1 blinking in anywhere from 5 to 100 miles. Last week I filled the tank and squeezed gas in until it overflowed - only the 2nd time I've done that in almost 3 years with my 04, and the first pip disappeared after 5 miles.

When I did the gas gauge TSB, the dealership told me that Toyota sets the gauges to start showing 1 blinker after 8 gallons are gone. So in theory almost 4 gallons are left at that pont. With the inconsistency of the amount of gas I can put in relative to how many miles I've gone, I haven't tested that theory. Eventually I will.

I somehow doubt that Toyota said What I've noticed is this.. if my gas tank is actually close to its 11.9.. it'll take 2-3 gallons before the first pip will fade (9 pips left).. from there, its mostly gallon for gallon +5. So if you have 2 pips left (10-2 = 8.. usually 8.5 gallons will fill). It's kind of weird.. but unless the weather is cold, that's how my gas bladder acts. Of course, its a bladder.. and it will vary depending on whose bladder it is under a wide variety of conditions.. blah blah Just refill when youre at 2 or so and you'll be fine (some even wait until the last pip is blinking and you get the ADD FUEL message).. whatever works

I usually fill at 1 unblinking pip... my GUESS gauge has always shown full after a fill. Other times, I fill when commencing a long drive but never less than 3 or more gallons... GUESS gauge always shows full.

Hi, Phish,

When my gauge is showing 2 pips it MIGHT take 6 gallons. It usually takes less. When the car was new, it was pretty much one pip/one gallon, give or take. Right after the 10K servicing when the car was 5 months old, but before the gas gauge TSB, it started taking much less. That was August, when it was still warm, so it wasnt the bladder shrinking due to temps. It's possible it was reset by the dealer at that point.

It was the service counter person at Toyota who told me about the gas gauge setting. For all I know he's full of it but it would be nice to have some confirmation one way or the other.

Yeah Susan.. but since its a bladder, who really knows. Since its been colder here in Cali its been difficult filling my tank, blinking pip.. can only squeeze 7.5 gallons in! It comes and goes.. I've only had the car for 11 months (one year birthday coming up) and the car is at 33.5k miles.. Its had plenty of fillups.. getting used to the stranger bladder-behavior.. And as it warms up, its filling like it used to.

cshbell,

I had the same thing happen to me a couple of tanks ago. I filled up; drove home and the tank never reset. I woke up the next morning and was on my way and the fuel gage was reset. I filled up with the power on and I thought I had damaged something.

My "free" advice [and worth every cent it costs you.. ]:

Don't try to assign gallons to the 'pips' on your GUESS gauge. It just won't work due to the inaccuracies of the system, ambient temperatures [the bladder stiffens when cold] and varying fuel consumption rates. As I mentioned above, I've NEVER run out of fuel in either my '04 or new '07 Prius and NEVER wish to. For me, 'bragging rights' on how much fuel I'm able to pump into my Prius tank have no attraction.

My 2¢ worth...

After a year of driving, I started filling up when I am five pips down. It usually takes about five gallons and I never have to worry about how many gallons are in the bladder or how many more miles I can drive. I know its about 250. Life is so much easier.
