Default Accidentally locked out

My wife had an incident with our 2006 Prius where she thought she was locked out. She had thrown the lock switch on the driverside door armrest with her smart key in her purse on the floor behind the back seat. All the passenger doors then locked but the back hatch was partially open. She ended up climbing through the back and over the seat to retrieve her purse.

When she told me this, I felt I had to recreate the situation. I had been under the impression that you couldn't lock yourself out with the smart key in the car. Here's what I found:

If the keys are in the car, the rear hatch is open, you throw the inside lock switch, and you shut the driver door, all the passenger doors will lock without a beep or a flashing signal.

However, if shut the rear hatch (scary), the car will beep, lights will flash, and all the doors will unlock.

Can I therefore say that it is impossible to lock the Prius if you have a smart key system and smart key is enabled on the dash?

Second issue: Suppose that you disable smart key and lock the doors (I guess that's possible). I have been told by someone else that they were able to call someone at home and have that person to use the matching remote fob to beep "unlock" over the telephone. The person near the car then holds the cell phone close to the car and the car unlocks. Sounds incredible to me but sounds like a new experiment.

The telephone thing is a myth...see

It is possible to lock the keys in the Prius...but very very difficult...easiest thing is to just never touch the door lock button in the car unless you are in the car and all the doors are closed.

Thanks for the link to I had wondered how a cell phone could be used to unlock the door since I thought that remotes used RF and not sound. That's exactly what snopes points out as the crux of the falacy. People who think it works are probably testing it with the sending phone actually being in range of the car.

If the hatch is open, then the car should not have allowed a lock.
But then I remember, that's if you press the black button outside the car.

I guess it allowed the doors to be locked because it sensed you still had a way in: through the hatch. I bet it wouldn't have allowed the doors to remain locked if the hatch was closed.
Once you attempt to completely lock yourself out by closing the remaining ingress, it unlocks.

Careful though, there are a few dead spots where the Prius wouldn't be able to detect that the fob is in the car. Not too many spots fortunately, since there is an oscillator in the inside hatch area to sense that the fob is in this area, which is out of range of the room (cabin) oscillator. You wouldn't think so though, since the room oscillator is behind the rear cupholders at the rear of the center console.
