the maintenance required light flashes for a while after I start the car. Is it possible to tell what it thinks the problem is? I suppose I've been driving it for 6 months, but if it wants me to get a 5k checkup, shouldn't I be able to tell on the MFD?
It's saying that pretty soon you will be due for a 5K interval oil change. When it hits 5K, that light will stay on.
If you have NAV, there is a maintenance screen you can set up. At least for 2004/2005 it only came with NAV. The dealer doesn't set this up for you, you have to do it yourself.

Around 4500 mine started having the light come on.. but would turn off after a few seconds. At 5000 it stayed on permanently till I got it serviced, so I would have to say its a "service is due" warning.
The Maint Reqd light will start blinking at 4500 miles since last reset, and will stay on constant at 5000 miles since last reset.
It's not a warning that your car is going to fall apart and you should stop driving it. It isn't smart and does an engine oil analysis or counts by time since last reset, it's just a mile counter.
To turn it off if whomever changes the oil for you doesn't turn it off for you:
