Default Poor radio reception

I thought I remembered seeing this a year or so ago. It seems that my 04 radio reception is getting worse. Now when I travel under an overpass, near some electric wires the reception is so bad and staticy that it is un intelligable. Twice during routine maintenence I have asked the dealer to check this and twice was told my radio was working as any Prius radio does.

Does anyone have experience with this? Did anyone have a radio replaced?
Thanks, Ron

I would suspect a broken antenna. Maybe a car wash broke it internally without it showing on the outside? Maybe it's just loose or corroded? Try unscrewing it, cleaning it with a brass brush, and reinstalling it.

Thanks for the suggestion. I was so hoping that was it but no improvement. The service writer told me that Toyota radios were known for "weak reception". Any truth to that?

We had a 1993 Tercel, 1984 Pick up, some ancient Corolla, and currently a 1995 Camry, 1995 Tacoma, 2004 Camry.. and have had zero issues with "bad radio."

Ask him to put in writing that his company's radios are junk. Then show the letter to a zone rep. He's full of it.

The antenna has an amplifier. Problem could be with the amp itself (which I believe is in the antenna base) or the power feed to it from the radio.

Swing by a radio shop that does the installations for all the discount stores (Costco, Best buy, Circuit City ect) and ask them. They might give you an opinion of the quaility of the radio.

Default Poor radio reception

Had same problem, after a great tech. changed amp. changed radio. Toyota said to put new cable from radio to antenna on the other side of the headliner away from were the old cable was. This fixed the poor reception.

This is correct. The most likely cause of failure is a broken/damaged coaxial cable from the antenna to the radio. This can be a nasty one to replace, being snaked in the windshield pillar, I believe.
