I recently had an oil change through the dealership and they said I need to do the 100k maintenance. They said something about having to flush the radiator and trans fluid, etc.

Is there anywhere else I can go that would be more cost-effective? I live in the Metro Detroit area (MI).

They also said I need new tires, no dispute there. However, they want appx. $450. When all is said and done, they gave me an estimate of over $1200.

I'm on a tight budget and this car has to last forever! I think Belle Tire is more affordable at appx. $225 for three tires.

So, I'd love to hear back from those who know the Prius inside and out.

thanks!

The 100k maintenance is expensive, no matter where you go because a lot of things need to be done, like changing the spark plugs, replacing the coolant in both the radiator loop and the inverter loop and a number of other tasks I can't remember as I post this.

I wish I could say your typical oil, lube, filter place could do this work, but to be honest, some of the special tasks necessary to properly flush, fill and vacuum down the engine coolant loop is something that a lot of independent shops wouldn't be aware of unless they had a "Prius guy" on staff.

So, I would say, that if this dealer is doing the 100k maintenance by the book, the price they are charging seems reasonable. As for tires, I don't buy tires from dealers. Some dealers sell tires as a value added service, in which the margin they make on the sale of tires isn't all that valuable. They don't make a lot of money doing it, but it keeps the customer's business in their building. Other dealers sell tires to pad their bottom line by telling a customer that they need to have the factory brand and type of tire on their car. They then sell tires at a significant mark-up compared to a tire shop or a tire seller like Costco.

I would definitely look at your local club store for good tire prices. Also consider that your tires are a safety device on your vehicle, sometimes the most important safety device. I've purchased upper end tires on all of my vehicles for many years now and have always had excellent stopping distances, great wet and snow handling. Whatever you do, don't skimp out on rubber.
