Default Smart Key not working

I have 2006 Prius with all the bells and whistles. Recently the smart key stopped working. I can not lock/unlock the car by pushing the door handle button or walking up to the car with the keyfob in my purse. The locks only work if I use the button on the keyfob. When I push the button near the door handle it just beeps for a long time.

I tried pushing the "key" button under the steering wheel at the bottom of the dash, but that simply turned off the smart key altogether and didn't fix the problem.

This may be unrelated, but I saw tire pressure mentioned with another smart key problem on this site. My tire pressure light appeared for a few days, then it went away without me adding air....about the same time my smart key stopped working.

How can I get the smart key working again? Could this be a serious computer problem? Keeping my fingers crossed that it is not!

First things first ... check your tire pressures. You have one or more that is low on pressure. The TPMS indicator came on because of low pressure. After the tire(s) warmed up the pressure increased enough to reset the alarm.

As for the SmartKey, does the spare fob also not work correctly? Have you changed the battery in the fob? Most likely the battery in the fob is weak and needs to be replaced.

hello, and thanks for your reply. Yes, I intend on checking the pressure. For some reason, the gas station I went to last had no air pump, so I post poned it. Then, the tire pressure alert light went off, so I thought maybe something electrical was going on. But the increase in warm weather makes sense. Also, here is the string where another person mentioned her smart key not working after her tire pressure light was cleared. It's a little different from my situation, as I didn't have my alert light cleared. I also tried the remedy that was suggested to her: making sure the "key" button under steering wheel was in the out position. I just thought the tire pressure light/smart key thing was kind of curious.

Also, I replaced both batteries in my key fob within the last few months. I suppose it is possible that one of the batteries I used to replace it was already a little old. But, when I put it in my key fob it worked beautifully, as the fob had completely died.

Any other ideas as to why my key fob works, but the smart key buttons near the door handles just angrily beeeeeeeeeeeeeep at me when I push them?

Thanks!

Are you having the same problem with both fobs or just one? If it's just the one fob, replace the battery again. If the other fob works, then the problem is with the original fob and not with any ECU in the car.

Hi, kanne,

At first I thought one of the 4 doors or the hatch was ajar or the car was still powered up (making the single long beep), & then I re-read the original post. With the car locking O.K. with the fob's push buttons, it can't be a door ajar problem. I'm leaning now towards the problem being with the antenna for the door sensor of whichever door you are using the black SKS button on. Will the black button on the hatch or the other front door allow the car to lock up for you?

Thanks guys, but all doors sound a Beeeeeeep if I push the smart key buttons near all the handle latches.

My dh misplaced the spare key fob, so I can't test it (aaarg), but the main one works very well. If I had another battery, I would try exchanging it, but I did change it quite recently. Besides, when it died last time, it did not effect the smart key this way.

It's still a mystery. I just hope it is not due to a serious and expensive electrical issue. Maybe I'll call the dealorship. I just don't want to have to bring it in and be told it needs something it doesn't. I'm a bit wary of mechanics...

THANKS A MILLION or at least the 100 dollars or so that I would have spent going to the dealer to have them push the button under the steering wheel. Both of my FOBs stopped working yesterday and when they didn't work after new batteries I just knew I was dealership bound. I could lock and unlock with the FOB and start with the FOB in the slot but no smart key operation. After reading the blog I pushed the smart key button and prayed. Don't know which one did the trick but my 08 is back up and running in smart key mode.

Thanks for the forum.

Hi, lx470,

That's exactly what I figured too, but kanne's post was from March 2011 (thread just refreshed for viewing last month by Jerrydkinard) and the most recent post I can find from kanne is in another thread back in Feb of this year, so I didn't offer the idea that both you & I came up with because I figured kanne wasn't a frequent visitor here. Hopefully kanne's problem has been resolved by the dealer in the last 2 and 1/2 years.

I'm not the person who originally posted this question, but I wanted to thank you for your response. I just purchased a 2007 Prius that the person I bought it from had reclaimed from salvage and repaired. He only had one smart key for the car, so I was looking to go through the expense and hassle of getting another one. However, I was having the same problem as Kanne with the smart key feature not working for locking or unlocking doors (except unlocking worked with the rear door).

After searching for answers to this and reading your post, I unlocked my car with the button on the smart key remote, put the key 30 yards away, & tried starting my car. Sure enough, it started! After searching, I found the second smart key in an envelope under the passenger seat! And now the locking and unlocking with either smart key works just fine! I am sooooo happy!

Thank You!
