Default The annoying reverse beep

I read in a post that it is possible to turn off the ding that goes off (rather loudly) when you are in reverse. It's a pretty annoying noise, especially when you're backing and have to pause for a few seconds. It just keeps going and going. I feel I'm swift enough to know the car is backing up most of the time, so would like to quiet it.

The index has no useful entries for "reverse" or "buzz", as I think Toyota calls it. Does anybody know where this is located in the manual?

Thanks.

Don.

Hi again, Don,

I'm sorry if I can't be as helpful for this post as I may have been for your other question under "Prius key replacement" also in this Q & A category/topic. I think you have to go to the dealer to have the reverse beeper turned off through the customizable settings (somebody please correct me if there is a do-it-yourself way to do it similar to the fob programming dance described in Q & A's "Prius key replacement"). Be aware that if your 12V battery dies or is disconnected, the beeper will have to be re-silenced again.

Personally, Don, even though a lot of owners have the beeper silenced, I prefer to hear the warning in case I click "D" too fast for it to take & the transmission is still in reverse. It's saved me a couple of times from having accidents when I swore I had gone into Drive & was ready to step on the gas but heard the reverse beeper warning me otherwise. If I were you, even though it annoys you, I would wait for a while (before having the beeper turned off) until you've gotten used to some of the quirks of the car to see if the beeper ever saves you in a likewise manner. You may change you mind about having it silenced [especially if you have to pay a lot to have the dealer do it (& your 4-yr old 12V battery may need to be replaced soon---requiring paying the dealer to turn it off again as well as re-setting any "auto-power-up" windows)].

As far as silencing the beeper when you "have to pause for a few seconds" when backing, you could just move the shift selector to "N" & then back into "R" when continuing to back up. I think I was more help in your other post.

The reverse beep can be turned off on the 04-09 by the user. Instructions are located here on POL. Do a search for "reverse beep". On the 2010, the dealer must disable the beep.

Found it ... here's the process to diable the reverse beep got the Gen II Prius:

1. Sit in driver's seat - POWER ON (No passenger or heavy object in passenger seat);

2. Set the Trip/ODO to ODO, NOT Trip A or Trip B; Cycle through even if ODO already showing;

3. POWER OFF;

4. POWER ON to "Ready"; and WITHIN SIX SECONDS;

5. Press and HOLD the Trip/ODO button FOR 10 SECONDS OR MORE, then WHILE STILL HOLDING THE Trip/ODO button;

6. With your FOOT ON THE BRAKE, shift from P(Park button) to R, then back to P; then release the Trip/ODO button;

7. The speedometer will show "b on" or "b off" where you'd normally see the odometer reading. (If you followed the steps successfully!)

8. Press the Trip/ODO button to toggle the beep on or off;

9. POWER OFF

Note: If your 12-volt battery is disconnected or discharged, this setting will revert to the factory standard (beep on).

It's a little tricky but will work.

Welp. Both suggestions were helpful. I need to give this some thought before undertaking the "rub your stomach while patting your head" routine. I didn't know about the delayed shifting, and my wife also drives the PRius. So I need to consider.

And thanks for those instructions, which remind me of directions for hacking a WII. And which I will definitely save. BTW, if I make a mistake, does the car turn into a Fiat?

Hm. Took the trouble to post a reply from my Blackberry today, but it's not here.

O well.

I said, and say now, that you two have given me a lot to think about. This seems like a little difficult, like patting your head and rubbing your stomach, but doable.

But since my wife also drives the car, I wonder if it's desirable? Hm.

Thanks to you both.

Don.
