Default unlocking all 4 doors with SmartKey

I'm trying to set my '08 Prius so I can unlock all doors using the SmartKey from the driver's side.

The manual (pg. 43) seems to imply it's possible (although it contradicts this on pg. 488-9). Unfortunately, I can't figure out what it's saying. In step 2, it says to push and hold <something> while pushing <something else> on the SmartKey. Both <something> and <something else> are icons. The <something else> is clearly the lock button, but I don't know what the <something> is. It looks vaguely like (((D, but it's not a smiley . I've tried several buttons (including the two below the steering wheel), with no luck.

What is it I'm supposed to be pushing, and where is it?

I find pushing the unlock button, twice, about 1 sec, apart, works.

Sorry, I didn't explain myself.

If you have the smart key in a pocket, then when you walk up to the front passenger's door and touch the back of the door handle (without having to push any button on the smart key), all the doors get unlocked. But if you walk up to the driver's door and do that, only the driver's door unlocks.

I want to make it behave so that all four doors get unlocked when I touch the back of the driver's side door handle (without pushing the button on the smart key).

I don't have my manual handy, but I think it's telling you to push the unlock button and alarm button at the same time. There is then a sequence (a beep is heard) for unlocking all doors or just the driver's door.

I recently successfully made that change following the instructions in the manual; If no one else posts a clarification by tomorrow evening, I will try to remember to do so~
Also, note that there is a small mechanical switch in each rear door to prevent kids accidentally opening the door from inside the car; Default position is to allow opening~

Hey, Mike~
It is a bit cumbersome to set up, but once you set it, forget it.
(This presumes that it works the same as my '07.)
First, the two buttons under the steering column are for resetting the Tire Pressure Monitor (right one), and turning on and off the Smart Key System (left one); Also, they are different types of switch: The TPM is a momentary switch, and the SKS is a two position, push-on/push-off switch: The 'in' position is OFF (SKS disabled), and the 'out' position is ON (SKS enabled)~

Step 1. Push the left switch until it remains in the 'out' position. Your SKS system is enabled.

Step 2. Turn the car off if it is on.

Step 3. Be outside the car with the doors closed; Now examine the fob; The 'lock' button (with the closed padlock symbol), and the 'alarm' button (a speaker symbol with lines radiating from it) need to be pressed simultaneously for "about five seconds". If you can hear, you may hear one beep coming from inside the vehicle, but you should hear two double-beeps from outside the car. Release the buttons. If you hear a pattern other than two double-beeps, press the buttons again for another five seconds... And again if necessary. Once you hear the two double-beeps, the SKS should be in the 'all doors unlock' mode.

Step 4. Test it.

By the way, I pulled the key from the fob and keep the key on my key ring should the fob fail (hasn't yet). I put the fob in a little zip-lock bag to keep the dust and moisture out of it, and just move it from pants to pants. Don't forget to toss it on the dash when taking the car in for service; It can remain there while the car is in their care. You can't forget it because the car won't let itself be locked while the fob is inside the car.

Best wishes

Thanks, that worked!

Moral of the story: the icons in the manual are not always the same as the icons in real life. (Icon looking something like '(((D' in book = icon of speaker with four lines radiating out of it.)

This is all well and good, but did you actually pick a small, crawling bug as your avatar?

That thing freaked me out! I thought it was in my computer!
Get it off my screen!
