Default Non-working Brake Lights

So I was driving in the far left lane on the 10-W the other day, and there was this van in front of me. For the life of me, I couldn't figure out why I kept coming sooo close to hitting the darn van. So after about the 5th time, I realized the idiot's brake lights were none operational!

When I had a free moment and traffic got worse, I moved to the lane to the right and managed to creep up to this non-brake-light-working van. I rolled down my window in stopped traffic and yelled "your back brake lights aren't working!" The passenger and driver looked over, the driver shrugged with the "I don't care" kind of look on her face. I WAS FURIOUS.

So I repeated myself, "YOUR BACK BRAKE LIGHTS ARE NOT WORKING!" She still just shrugged. I finally found myself screaming at this woman, you idiot, I almost hit you like five times, because I can't tell when you're f'ing stopping.. if someone hits you, its partially your fault!

Okay.. /rant off. I'm done for now But I keep running into these non-working brake lights people.. and I swear I'm close to getting out of my car during rush hour traffic and chewing one of their heads off..

In their defense, it is hard to hear or tell what someone is screaming/beeping/waving at you for.

It is also hard to tell WHO is waving/yelling/beeping at you, so if I ignore you when you try and give me a friendly beep, it isn't personal.

You should be sufficiently away from the vehicle that you can track the speed of the vehicle in front of you without hitting them, even if they do a sudden stop.

Thank you. I was thinking EXACTLY that.

Also, do you know that in most states, hand signals are still REQUIRED, even with electric signaling lights?

Years ago my uncle was arguing that they should have done away with that for the tests.
I reminded him that bicyclists still use them, and thus you still need to know their intent. Of course there's also the situation of equipment failure.

In a case like this, don't mouth words. They have no idea what crazy rant you may be on. Point. Point to the back of their vehicle. They will at least wonder if they have a flat or if grandma is dragging behind the car. Hopefully they will roll down the window so you can help.

Their windows were down. I pulled up right next to them in STOPPED freeway traffic. It was not that noisy out, we were in the left part of the freeway so no semis around.. and yeah I did point while I was saying BACK BRAKE LIGHTS..

They'll learn someday hopefully, without anyone getting hurt.

Obviously they were driving a clunker and were hoping to collect on insurrance. You just can't drive far without brake lights without an accident. Wonder if they even made it to where they were going that day.
